Notwithstanding the fact that you don't seem to understand distance and speed Amtrak has a high speed rail and is looking to up the speeds to 186 mph in the coming years. We're waiting to see if we have won a project along the high speed rail in the eastern corridor.

region wide public transit system that is actually incentivized

What do you mean by "actually incentivized"?

Subsidized and Paid for by tax payers? Would it be a city tax? County, State or Federal tax?

Because not everyone lives in densely populated urban areas?

LIAR.

I went from St Louis to Chicago by train. Might have been the worst experience of my life. 9 hour tour.

Similar experience for me. 6 hours from Memphis to Jackson FML

If you have a car and operate it on public highways, you should stop immediately. Or else you will be a total hypocrite on this too.

I was stranded on a train in Australia once. It was so hot, the tracks warped.

Trains can be useful when connecting densely populated areas that need to be connected. Not sure NOLA to Chicago is a high demand path.

Like, it takes a day by Amtrack to get from Chicago to New Orleans. In Europe and Asia it would take less then 2 to 6 hours. Why is most of America anti-trains?

Those European and Asian countries invested more in rail technology 20 years ago. Air travel was deemed more important in America so the commercial airlines got the investments here.

Also, I looked into taking a train trip a couple years ago and it is nowhere near as cheap as it should be. I ended up getting plane tickets for $50 more and got there in less than a qtr if the time a train would have taken.

I loved taking the Shinkansen in Japan. I don't think it would work here though, at least not now (maybe in a few decades). Our cities aren't as dense and walkable as Japan or Europe and we would have to spend billions to upgrade the tracks, renovate stations, and electrical lines. I think the Amtrak Acela line makes a profit but it serves an area that has 20% of the US population within 300 miles of each other (Boston,NYC,Philly,Jersey, Baltimore, and DC).

Rail in the US is mainly focused on movement of freight and it is second to none in the entire world. If you could snap your fingers and swap Europe’s ability to move people via rail and Europe get our freight rail system then the cost of goods here in the US would sky rocket due to additional delivery costs. I don’t think the average American realizes the volume of commodities that move by rail that otherwise would have to move by truck. Our highways are congested now if we had no freight by rail it would be a economic disaster for the US.

Because I like to fly……..

Now if a private business wants to spend their money to create a faster train I would say more power to them.

Have you been to O'Hare OP? I'd bank on two hours just to board the train.

Because the train routes don't exist outside of the densely populated northeast.

If the routes existed and no one took the train, then you can make this argument.

i’ve looked into it before.
The setup is terrible.

if you’re not getting off/on and one of the major hubs, the timing can be atrocious and the stations aren’t big like airports.

The ICE trains here in Germany are capable of reaching 180 mph ,but they never usually sustain that speed for extended periods of time. Under the right conditions with no stops and a clear track with sustained speeds you would be able to reach New Orleans from Chicago in 6 hours , really it would take closer 10-11 hours with stops and traffic on the tracks.

A flight from Chicago to New Orleans is just a little over 2 hours. If I will go somewhere not driving myself I will choose the fastest and most efficient method of travel available. It is not that people are "anti train" it is just they have stuff to do and want to get there ASAP.

Paris to Budapest 16 hrs and
Chicago to new orleans 19 hrs are pretty comprable trips, in mileage and time.

Last time i tried amtrack, i got round trip air for four dallas to el paso for what 1 one way ticket on train cost.

You are guaranteeing.

A stupid thing to say not knowing the cost of operation.

Did anyone ever tell you about the relationships between price, demand and supply???

I guarantee you people in Nashville and Knoxville would line up for free apple pie.

I've walked into ORD 45 minutes before my flight and made it comfortably multiple times. It's one of the most consistently efficient TSA checks I've encountered.

Our investment in air over rail started waaaay before 20 years ago. Commercial airlines got government investment because their research partnerships were instrumental in our military, (and thus economic) might.
