What about service companies that don’t have a product?

Or a product that's built to order with a 20 week lead time and costs 4 million dollars in a competitive market with low volumes and high margins and major exposure.

I sell Medical IT..it touches every aspect of the hospital from transport to EVS to Nursing to Dietary to the OR's. If you let the guy or girl who can "pull the specs" on this operational concept sale do the homework and try to educate the C-Level the aquisition will never happen because they can't explain the ROI that can show that that what I sell is not only self funding, but actually makes 30 to 50x in some facilities and enterprises. Other projects become the "thing" of the moment, and the very application they need to finally run the hospital efficiently dies and gets shoved behind some new beds, or the next patient pavillion. I made every bit of the ridiculous salary I earned last year. It is not as simple as you paint it and my sales cycle is about 18 months long to prove it.

I’ll never go back to a desk job

Been in sales 14 years

Work from home
Make my own schedule
Hire good people under you to do 50% of your job
Get to entertain clients- concerts/meals

I’d kill myself if I had to sit at a desk more than 2 hours

I'm genuinely asking. I get 30, 40, 50 years ago why sales guys would earn there money. However, in today's information age why are we still paying sales reps potentially such hight salaries? It seems to me they are glorified order takers for the most part. Anyone can get online and find any product they want.

Depends on what you are selling.

If it is a highly engineered product you are not just going to go online and buy something for your plant or factory.

You can have processes systems, equipment, measurement, etc, which can cost anywhere from $2K to $100K + a pop with large projects getting into the millions.

The reality is that people selling in these areas are, at the good companies, are degree'd salesmen. Some sells positions require an engineering degrees based on the products.

What made me think of this is one of my clients is a hospital and I've had to research medical devices. I can find the exact specs of products online so if I were the device company why would I pay such a high commission for someone to go sell it?

The good salesmen understand the problems you are having. Why else are you looking for a new product? They then find the solution hat is right for you. The internet does NOT do this for you.

Have you never purchased something off Amazon only to receive it and not be happy with the purchase because it was missing features you didn't think about at the time of purchase?

I work on the other side as a purchaser and my job is made a hell of a lot easier when I have a good sales rep with a company. They can assist with expediting orders, finding product alternatives, discounts on bulk purchases, and a lot of other things that I can't find out by just searching online.

So H&R Block lets you set up shop from home? Do you work out of your garage?

You probably get more smoke breaks that way.

Well you better get back to the garage. Laquisha needs her taxes done.

A sales person making your job easier has nothing to do with the value they bring to their employer. Congrats on them letting you be lazy though!

silly me. You don’t have a garage. You don’t even own a home.

I recall you saying earlier in this thread your “rent” is $1100 a month.

That wouldn’t even cover the rent on my pool house.

Get back to work son

depends on what you're selling.

I work 6-3:30 only on weekdays, only have to go to office once every two weeks for an hour. It gets a little old after a while, but I enjoy the freedom of making my own schedule
