this is not a parody, but a real article on the BBC website:

quote:

People of colour have been historically excluded from the sport, but now, a series of Black-run organisations around the world are hoping to change that.

In early 2023, a coach full of skiers and snowboarders pulled into France's Chamonix resort at the base of Mont Blanc. After carving down the slopes by day, the group turned up to a blend of Afrobeats, R&B and dancehall music at night, roping resort guests into a tipsy rendition of the Electric Slide as the stars glimmered overhead. The trip had been organised by Soft Life Ski, a British collective which aims to bring "Afro-Caribbean culture and vibes to the slopes".

quote:

"If you go somewhere that is predominantly white [as a Black person], you might not feel at home," said Edmund Antwi, one of Soft Life Ski's co-founders. "We create room for those people to relax, enjoy their music, learn a new skill and have a laugh with people who look like them."

quote:

"The whiteness of skiing in the US is partly tied to [its] cultural, national and racial history," said Annie Gilbert Coleman, whose paper The Unbearable Whiteness of Skiing examines the sport's lack of diversity. "It's tied to the strategies of early resort owners, who were trying to bring investors in and make things look very sparkly. Celebrities and rich people were the target for [the popular Idaho ski resort] Sun Valley and they soon became the target for [Colorado's famous ski destination] Aspen, too."

Excluded as in prevented from participating?

It can. With time. It is a sport that is tough to meet the buy-in barrier. But just like all sports, it will become more diverse as more diverse people participate.

Right. It's 2024, not 1957

Excluded by default. Skiing costs a lot of money. There is less generational wealth being passed down in the black community. This is not hard to acknowledge for anyone with a smidgen of integrity.

Sure, they can pull themselves out of that by their boot straps, but by then it's too late to become an elite skier. They would have to take their kid. But it's a tough activity to teach your kid if you yourself didn't learn to ski until your mid 30s or early 40s

So, everything that costs money is racist?

I don't think you need 200 years of generational wealth to learn to ski and get good enough to attract attention from sponsors. It's 2024, has anyone been excluded from learning to ski in the last 60 years?

One of the absolute worst. Since day one he has been trying so hard that he's done nothing by twist himself into a pretzel.

Wait, what? Your post is actually pretty fricking racist on its face.

You think it takes “generational wealth” to be able to afford to ski? Black people can afford Disney trips, phones and cars much nicer than mine, etc. yet I’ve gone skiing a good bit over the years.

I don’t notice your posts often, but are they always this fricking stupid? Good Lord.

Plenty of Indians, Asians, Cubans, Africans have moved to the US from abject poverty and built wealth in a generation. They are typically higher earners than the average white person. But somehow black Americans are excluded from that opportunity.

I find it unbearable that they only choose to ski in the white snow. The only snow anyone ever talks about is the white kind.

Or...they simply don't care about it and don't live in areas where it's popular and accessible to those with modest incomes. I'm fairly certain I've seen some lower end vehicles in the parking areas of ski resorts.
