Calling LSU Internal Audit alums…anyone made a switch to a more finance/accounting role?

Internal audit professional with 7 years of experience. I worked in external audit for 3 years then switched to internal audit for a large company in Houston. I’m moving back to Louisiana and with the switch, want to switch up my career as well. I’d like to go the more finance/ accounting route and be a controller or upper level finance position some day (even at a smaller company). My main concern is that internal audit is dead end in a city/state like New Orleans.
Before anyone asks, I have not passed my CPA. I have 2 kids and am moving back to New Orleans to take care of my mother. I am still relatively young (31) and want to know if anyone else has made this sort of transition before and is it even possible?

Then you aren’t going to get a real controller, CFO, CAO role. That just is what it is

you got a green polo and a walmart spot for him?

Yep. LSU Internal Audit. Worked at that until about 30 then ended up doing an SFA position at large tech company doing operations finance. Kind of a backdoor in and a shitty title but it got me in a field with way more growth and slingshot my career. Now I dont remember anything about audit outside of adding red boxes on pdfs.

Nice. I’m fine with making a move to a smaller company. I’m getting paid decently right now - roughly 120k total comp. I know the market is different in New Orleans as there is less public companies than Houston and less need for IA professionals.
I’d like to get something semi comparable in terms of pay at some point. I just don’t know if this switch is even possible 7 years in with no CPA.

Do you have to leave now? It’s urgent? Why not move your mom to you? You can’t work on the CPA in the next year?

Yes I do need to leave in the next few months. Unfortunately, with the two kids and coming back to help with mom I likely won’t have time to study. I procrastinated the first few years after college when I should’ve taken it.

Yes you do, you’re just choosing not to. It takes 90 minutes a day and a couple hours on each weekend day.
You have the time, you just don’t want to sacrifice what it takes to get it done. Which is fine, I’m not being a dick, just be realistic.
I’ve seen this shite a million times, “I want to be a controller or upper level finance” or “yes, public accounting is what I want to do and I want to get to manager and above”
Well ok, here is exactly what you need to do, and the steps are laid out for them. Response: “well, I don’t have time” or “that’s too hard”
Again, that’s fine, but don’t say you want to be a controller, because you don’t.

I know you are an edge lord on here, but while your post does make sense, you have to realize that some people's situation actually do not "have time" to do certain things. The dude has 2 kids and an elderly mother. I can see where he cant consistently carve out the time for it. Maybe he could do it 2-3 days a week, but that is still not enough.
There are a lot of things I would like to do if I had more time. I am a runner, and I would like to run a marathon. But my situation in life right now doesn't give me access to the consistent training time that a marathon demands. Could I go for a 2 hour run this weekend? Yes. But next weekend maybe not if my kids have soccer games, track meets, practices, etc. Also there's church, grocery runs, cooking time, yardwork. Then weekdays are even harder. There are several days a week where I am away from home over 14 hours with work and driving kids to 2 different practices. By the time I get home I have to eat dinner, shower, and get ready for the next day. Oh yeah, and also have time to be present for my wife and kids. Something you don't have to do.
Yes we all have the same 24 hours in a day, but "I don't have time" is a real reason for a lot of people with families. So I would suggest that you have a little grace and understanding rather than try to be Mr. Hot Take all the time.

Maybe 5%. Maybe

I do when it’s true, but most people are just undisciplined.
And by the way, I’m not shitting on the guy. He has a nice career. But if he says those are the things he wants to do, that is what it takes. So don’t say you want to something and then in the next breath say it’s too hard.
Additionally, the jobs he wants aren’t 9-5 where you can close your computer and go home so the “I don’t have time” isn’t going to cut it anyway. Which for the 3rd time, is fine, that’s not for everybody, but be realistic about it
