Are you a single mother/father? If not, your spouse needs to understand that they may need to sacrifice for a season while you shore up your career path, whichever cert you choose (CPA, CFE, CIA, etc.)
You are taking a nut shot of career trajectory (including pay and job availability) moving to Louisiana from Houston, and need every possible disadvantage erased now, not later.

Is there any real value in the Louisiana (NOLA) job market with the other non CPA certs? I’m so far removed from LA now.

You don't have your CPA...but do you have your CIA?

I did internal audit for about the same amount of time as you and switched to a budgeting role in finance at the same company. I kinda hated it. It was much more stressful because if I just made one small mistake when putting together actual spend and forecast, it could have a huge impact. There wasn’t anything like that in audit. After a year in Finance, I returned to audit.
The good thing about internal audit is that you get to know lots of important folks at your organization, and if you create good relationships with those folks, you already have a foot in the door if you do want to transition to a new role internally.

Unknown, every LSU IA person that graduated with my ex-wife got out of the state PDQ.
Two alternative possibilities:
1) Find a role with a Houston company that will let you work remotely and drive in for a few days a month
2) Explore possibilities with an accounting/consulting firm. There are a couple of jobs posted by Deloitte on Indeed for CFE and CPA (preferred) slots that also have <10% travel.

Then you aren’t going to get a real controller, CFO, CAO role. That just is what it is
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. No company worth a shite is putting someone in that position without a CPA. In fact, I'm sure the position description codifies the requirement.
Hell, even fed and state gov jobs are going to limit how high you can go without your CPA.

I don’t. I have a CFE.

Regardless, I don’t know how I would make the transition…especially at a smaller company with no CPA
Try to find a small business that needs a Controller and work your way up from there at other businesses.
I transitioned from law to Accounting/Finance without a CPA. Took a Controller job at a family business to learn for a few years, then transitioned into CFO roles. I don't have a CPA, but I do have an LLM in tax which allowed me to get my foot in the door at places that required a CPA

Yeah I know several CFO/controllers of smaller and medium sized companies without a CPA. They just didn’t come up from the internal audit route.

I went through LSUCIA and took a similar path. Worked in consulting before I built the courage to study and pass the CPA.
When I wanted to make that pivot into an accounting role in Nola, I went the corporate route. Unfortunately, not a lot of decent sized corporations in Nola, but look into Entergy, Pan Am, and Ochsner. If you’re able to land one of those roles, it gives you the flexibility to take care of your family. Compensation is close to a controller role for a small company, with much less stress/responsibility.

LSUCIA program taught me a lot. I don’t know what it’s like these days, but I learned so much about just being a professional.

Dr. Sumners screwed a lot of people, according to my ex wife, with his "selection" system for employer bids (or whatever the hell he did.)
Big 3 used to teach you a lot about being a professional (KPMG explicitly excluded.)

I do remember the selection process being weird. Kind of like med school matching, but I wouldn’t say people got “screwed”

I don’t even know what you are trying to get at with the comment

Either go into a consulting firm or look to transition into another similar role like risk, or compliance, operational excellence.

This is my exact take on the issue. You nailed the points exactly. Get off your arse and do what it takes to be a champion.
