Suck it up, kiddo, and stop being such a sourpuss! You're the low chick on the totem pole.

Theres a lot worse things in the workplace, and if this is daunting for her... she's going to need a helmet.

we should lighten up on her, changing the oil in the french fry machine all day long is probably a tiresome job

ETA: even if you have an assistant to help

The fact that you let it get to you enough to post on a random forum is troubling.

Are they saying "kiddo" as a term of endearment or meant as a slight at your age and therefore work experience?

This is the key. More than likely it is totally harmless and you are letting your personal issues creep in. (Probably some feminist/girl power issues in your subconscious.)

You sound like a less than happy person.

Old women call me honey or sweetie or whatever the frick they want to. And I just smile and say "yes ma'am"

My opinion, grow the frick up.

Wait...some dude posts on here earlier, bitching about paying $8 for a company-wide lunch, and everyone is like no, dude, don't pay that...justifying his post. All I say is that a condescending term or two is unprofessional and everyone assumes I'm crying over it. Ummm.... No. Wow you people really take something lighthearted and really run with it way further than it was ever intended. Some posters in here are actually the sensitive ones

Call her by the wrong name to her face. It will remind her that you do not care about her, and she will in turn stop talking to you. Boom no more kiddo

Honestly, I think it could sort of devalue the perception people have of you. People will say I am dumb or stupid, etc for saying this, but people, in general, act the way people treat us, even if we do not realize it, but in the workplace the two of you should be equals and if she is doing this in meetings or around other coworkers (especially older coworkers), they might, without even thinking about it, not have the same respect for you as others..

Does she call you this just when it is you and her around? If so, I wouldn't think much of it, but be aware of it and do something different that would likely make her look at you as a responsible adult. If she is doing it in front of people, you should go to her one day, don't be a dick about it, but just tell her "______________. I know you do not have any bad intentions at all and I do not want you to take this the wrong way (add in something like, "because I love you to death"), but would you not refer to me as kiddo?" Then just explain to her that if it wasn't in a work environment you would have no problem at all, but you would prefer not to be referred to that at work.

If she gets upset, at least she knows you are an adult and that she needs to be aware of her doing that not just to you, but to other younger people who will be hired there. And if her being upset doesn't really affect you doing your job then frick it.

If she isn't upset and completely understands, she will respect the fact you told her.

It boggles my mind that people really get offended over this crap. I own my company, and if one of my employees calls me a nickname or even makes fun of me, I think I can tell the difference between genuine disrespect and just friendly jibing.

If you REALLY think she is demeaning you, then try to drop some hints (like the suggestion to call her "grandma"). If it is just a friendly thing she uses to keep things casual, then get over yourself and learn how to roll with the rhythm of an office that is not an uptight chamber of people looking for moral high ground by being "offended".

This also goes for all you chiming in that you agree it is "unprofessional". Maybe it is. If you want an environment of strict professionalism, I suggest you find a job in some made up world on a Lifetime TV show. They don't exist, and the sooner you learn to roll with it, the sooner people stop rolling their eyes when you aren't looking. Learn the difference between friendly, mutual banter and genuine condescension.

(And, don't be surprised when you find yourself hearing about the happy hours you weren't invited to.)
