I think Baton Rouge is a fine place to live if you live in the right area. I’m under 10 minutes to work, a few minutes from Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s, WF, and any other number of stores, there are more restaurants than I have time to go to restaurants, I have a nice neighborhood to walk in, near a playground for the kids, etc. My life is incredibly convenient, and most people are very friendly. I think it’s a fine place to work and raise a family.

That said, I have no desire to retire here, and if I lived in the suburbs, I’d be counting the minutes to leave.

It is, but only if you commute to east to west in the mornings and vice versa.

If you live in one of the Garden District, Capital Heights, Southdowns, River Bend, Bocage, etc., you can live a mostly traffic-free existence in BR if you're even slightly strategic about your routes. And unlike many desirable neighborhoods in some other popular cities, there are actually affordable homes in many of those areas.

Still trafficky at times, but my commute across town is usually only between 12-15 minutes because of the direction.

Outside of food and LSU it’s a shithole. Any city that has a terrible public school system isn’t a great city to live in.

I'm saying that private schools are necessary in most large cities today. It's just really expensive and most people cant afford to live in the safe neighborhood in a large city, much less send kids to private school. So they all move to the suburbs to raise families. In Baton Rouge, you can find an affordable house and still get the city feel, amenities, and social scene.

It’s all relative to your personal situation. I live in Louisiana because my personal situation makes life here real comfortable. If there comes a time where the cons outweigh the pros then I will leave here in a heartbeat. I have made it real clear to my kids that they need to explore options outside Louisiana. That’s the real value in a career path and smart life choices.

People love Baton Rouge so much they'll work as waiters at Chilis with an MBA to "be close to family," etc. You kill your professional growth in a lot of professions by being tied to BR, MSY, or Louisiana in general.

The only thing that sucks is they’re all in strip malls.

Herein lies the problem with Louisiana residents. Forget our terrible schools, inept government, high taxes and crime. We have football, food, and drive thru liquor! This is why the aforementioned negatives will never change. Too many people are content with being fat, dumb, and drunk.

Agreed. When I lived in BR/NOLA the daily grind felt much more like a grind. Moving out to the mountains to a small town has gotten me to relax a lot.

I like it here too. It’s definitely not perfect, but the inordinate amount of hate it gets is kind of astonishing.

I agree. And if my kids choose to live here then that’s great good for them, but I do not want them to feel like they need to stay here because of their parents. I moved away for 15 years and when I was at a point to make it worthwhile professionally, I came back.

I lived there for a long time. I gave it a shot. It wasn't for me. I'm much happier where I am now.

Yea the plate lunch and sandwich shops comments made me laugh.

Now I assume you meant National Chain because Baton Rouge has a few places like Poboy Express and Off the Hook have multiple locations but very local.

Plate Lunches are good everywhere in town from Tony's Seafood in NBR to Arceneauxs on the River in South part of town(technically St Gabriel). But I'll tell ya what. If he'll go try DC Eats on North Blvd and don't like it, I'll Venmo him a refund.
DC Eats IG profile

Local Sandwich shops:

Canatellas
Anthony's Deli
Poboy Express
Am Mart
Off the Hook
Jeds
Mulberry Market
NY Bagel
Iverstines
Poor Boy Lloyds

That was just a few off the top of the head.

Join Eat the Boot Facebook Group and you'll find the Baton Rouge Metro Area has a shite ton of good food options.

I'm a Texan at heart and I could never live in another state, but I could do Baton Rouge for sure if I had to leave. I like:

College sports
Golf
Fishing
Hunting
Cooking the stuff from hunting and fishing

Baton Rouge checks a lot of those boxes. Yea Id be surrounded by canadians but I already am.

As long as you are OK with private schools I agree. It's not what it was, but no place is. If you can avoid traffic for your job (along with the schools) then sure. 30 years on I still like getting back to BR for the food and music. Fun place. I'm happy to have spent my growing years there.

Definitely have to love LSU and actually plan on attending many events. If you don’t the rest seems so much worse. I know when lsu stopped being a priority for me it seemed so much worse.

Nope this board has no place for good things to say about the area. People would rather pile on and be miserable.

The traffic is not that bad, people need to stop trying to travel across town at 5pm.

Or just figure out routes on surface streets.

There's almost always another way around if you are willing to detour

BR has its issues, sure. But it's got options too.
