It would never happen, but if it did, California would be a wasteland. Taxes and the cost of living would be a zillion percent. No drilling would force them to import all their oil and all the homeless and indigent dipshits they sponsor would wreck their welfare state even more than it is now

California produces a huge percentage of the food you eat. It may have to import oil but it would have a frick ton of oranges, tomatoes, beef, pistachios, cotton, milk, wine, and the entire world's supply of almonds to export.

California does have a lot of oil too. It would be funny to see how they realize how valuable the oil is and ramp up activity. It's the 4th most oil producing state behind Texas, North Dakota, and Alaska. Lots of offshore fields that are not allowed to be drilled in. They would have to re-evaluate their stance on fossil fuels.

Not to mention practically the entire movie and tech industry are run from the state. You take more from California than they take from you.

Yeah, this is definitely something this board likes to overlook. Cali gives way more than they take in. Southern states have benefited from all the money Cali gives up. Plus, we're not all liberal loons out here. There's plenty of conservatives as well.

But people in Texas were crazy to call for the same sort of thing while Obama was in office, right?

fricking hypocrites.

Pretty sure that Texas might be able to support itself.... well, as long as the price of oil is high.

Northern California hates the Southern part of the state and their Liberal Ilk.

This could be the North Cali way to get out.

Trying to explain the actual economics of this (which will never happen fwiw) on here is pointless.

Then do it and quit claiming how great cali is.

it isn't that great. we can just start farming veggies in south louisiana instead of sugar cane.

trade CNG to brazil to offset sugar loss.

Cali still needs eastern states for water and power.

Not as it's run currently, the unfunded obligations come due at some point.
