How does it work when she picked out the ring? She get super dressed up every time y’all go out thinking this, surely, will be the night he gives me my ring?
I can't imagine how shitty it must be to live your life conforming entirely to all of societal norms you feel you have to instead of, ya know, just doing whatever the frick you want.

Old timey crap here.

As others have mentioned, she's the one that has to wear the ring. You don't have to follow someone else's rules about how these things should go.

Not necessarily. But 100% can't afford the ring and should buy something less expensive.

We went look at a bunch together so I could get an idea of what she liked, then I went back on my own and picked one so it was somewhat of a surprise

Your one job is to make that moment magical.

Deal with it how you want.

Go to the fricking jewelry store and look at the goddamn rings...if you have no idea what she likes maybe you shouldn’t be getting married.

Whatever you 2 decide; you COULD propose but have a note in the box that says "you get to pick out your ring" and she wear it out of the store

I'd be bitter at the world too if Kige got engaged before I did.

how often do you get to discover the intricate preferences of engagement rings with your s/o?

this isn't like a dress or a blouse or something that is presented for review often

Right, she’d probably hate the ring she picked out two years down the road...if you pick her out a ring she’ll never even consider her decision...because it wasn’t hers.

What is this garbage? I'll probably get a cheap placeholder or use a family ring when I ask, and then bring her so she can help pick one at the store. It's her ring.

She's the one that is going to be wearing it. Nothing wrong with having her there to pick it out.

It’s a gift that shows whether or not you’ve been paying attention to what her preference are. If you have, you don’t need her present to pick out something she’ll love. It’s not a gift if she picks it out.

Maybe you're into women's jewelry, cool cool, if that's your thing. I'm happy for you.

To be honest I bought what I thought looked cool, and I bought the diamond I wanted to...because it was perfectly square and completely colorless. 5.49 by 5.49. I never considered for a second she wouldn’t like it.

Not if you're proposing to a woman.

Oh, she'll be all excited at first but that's the excitement of the engagement. Once she calms down she'll start looking at it in the light of what she would have liked more.

I had my wife's ring custom made but only after we had discussed in-depth what kind of ring she wanted (stones, settings, etc).

You sound like a keeper, not caring if she'd like it!!!
