I mean, if he didn’t fire a round, and one went off, that’s a pretty obvious fricking clue something weird just happened.

I disagree with Grok. I think it hit the primer just perfectly to set the round off.

The gun doesn’t look hot at this point.

Likely wouldn't kill anyone. No barrel to channel the energy. Would still hurt like hell though.

That's why you don't eject onto rock or concrete

Its what I thought too. But if you watch closely at the beginning, he looks like he takes the mag out and puts it in his mag holster on his right hip. (Suggesting he just emptied it at the target). Then he looks to check clear and the round rejects. So its either the cook off theory that Grok posed. Or, like another poster said, a bad/delayed primer.

I thought it just hit perfect when I saw it a couple days ago, but I just cannot see that having enough force to set the primer off.

I’ve had a lot hotter guns and not have a round cook off on its own. It doesn’t look like he’s dealing with a bad primer because when he ejects the shell he doesn’t look at it. Usually with a hard/unfired round I and everyone I know visually inspect it to see if it’s a film strike from the firing pin.

Who knows for sure, but I’m sticking with it hitting the ground perfectly. It would take a perfect contact to happen because you’re right on the force issue, but to “cook off” is an extreme heat. Like in a fire heat.

Maybe 20 years ago on the show MythBusters, they did an experiment on an old tale about a guy replacing an old type glass fuse in his truck with a .22LR round. This was pretty common back in the day.
Supposedly the round cooked off and killed him. Of course they tried to recreate the whole deal.
Well the round didn't cook off at first, so they created a dead short in the circuit. Guess what?
It cooked off.

Without being shot through a barrel, it's basically a firecracker.

The lighter of the 2 parts, would fly away at a damaging, possibly fatal, speed

In this case, I imagine the casing is lighter than the round

Grok is wrong. That round hit gravel perfect on the primer and went off.

Yeah, there’s absolutely no way those guys are running a pistol hard enough to get a round to cook off

So it was chambered, then it popped out when he pulled the slide back?

I don’t own a gun so didn’t know that could even happen…let alone said round going off by hitting the ground. Wild and I’m glad nobody was hurt.

LOL. You're going to be set upon like a bloody fox by hounds.

I consider it occasionally, but I’ve never been able to get comfortable with the idea of having one with small kids and I’ve never felt a strong need to own one. I didn’t grow up around them either.

I probably will in the future, so I try to pay attention and learn here and there.

EDIT: Also, since I’ve clearly said something that was very wrong, I probably have a lot to learn before I own one.

Didn’t Mythbusters do an episode on this? Cooking off rounds, while dangerous, is not even remotely close to firing one thru a barrel.

This is definitely true.

Sounds correct -

Not my proudest moment, but as a youth, would take the shot out of a shell, tape a marble to the end, and throw it to make it go off.

When I was a teenager, I was in the passenger seat and threw a .22 round out the window and hit a sign and it went off. I guess it hit the sign perfectly
