I still can’t exactly tell where the baseball is. Is it in the catcher’s glove when he throws it on the ground?
Maybe put in his back pocket when camera panned away

“So what rule is that?”
The one where you play until the game is over and a winner decided.

Kind of surprised that I have seven downvotes here. I mean a win is a win but do you really want to tell your kids “So I’m up to bat with all the pressure on and you know what I did? I struck out and then ran the bases while the other team celebrated”
I mean, I guess if trying to hook up with any girls in his HS class or any chicks at a frat party when he’s in college in the next couple of years, sure you’re right.
Once out of college/in the real world, this is a much more hilarious/better/non-douchey story in pretty much all contexts for the rest of his life (including to his kids).

I hope that catcher wasn’t the class valedictorian.

The third strike call was horrible. The ball was low and inside. The catcher looked like he reached out and tagged the kid.

Catcher reached but missed him

Dropped third strike (horrible call by the way but typical of high school umps). Batter becomes a runner. Throw to first you friggin idiot.
He dropped it. How is that a horrible call?

I mean you can’t tell the story without talking about how you failed and then won on a technicality and 15-18 year olds being so excited that they won a state Championship that they got caught up in the moment. Just saying like I said a win is a win but it would feel very cheap
And in twenty years it will be a state championship just like if you had run ruled them

He clearly put it in his pocket. Thats why the 2nd baseman cant find it.

The 2nd baseman is the best part of this video, he was losing his mind.

Something like that happened to the Brooklyn Dodgers against the Yankees in a world series in the 40s.
Really not the same thing at all. The pitcher in that case knew the rule and just couldn’t get to the ball in time to throw it to first.

You gotta know the rules, man. That’s the lesson.

Gotta know the rules, but the dropped strike 3 is the dumbest rule in all of sports

Catcher is an idiot. Fails to throw the runner out at 1st and then stashes the other team's game ball in is pocket. They should make him walk home.
As far as the strike call, yeah way off. Still that's a problem that SEC umps have and even in the majors. Deal with it and know the rules, and don't celebrate before the game is over.

I umpired a game where a girl struck out 6 in an inning, no one scored.

What a terrible article. Has that guy never watch baseball in his life? That rule comes into play almost every game at least once or twice.
I agree. As I said, the rule is hardly “obscure”.

I'm probably dead wrong ,but if you're up by 2, the catcher can launch it out of bounds and the runners can only advance 1 base. This was taught to us in high school, but that was 30 years ago.

I like how they talked back then.
“That was a tough break for Mickey to get. I bet he feels like a nickel’s worth of dog meat.”

Possibly, but in this case the catcher simply put the ball in his pocket and celebrated.
If you want more heartbreak, check out the previous play: LINK. Popup to pitcher who catches the ball but falls back and the ball pops out of his glove!
Clearly the baseball gods did not want Hornell to win.
