That sucks. But Kudos to the winning team for remembering the rule and staying alert.

Ahhh, the rarely seen inside the park walkoff passed ball strikeout.

Hope that catcher is a senior who graduates this week.

Correct me on this-- is it if the catcher drops the ball on strike 3 the batter can still run and try to get to first and the defense has to throw him out, and since they were so busy celebrating they just ran all the way and got two runs in?

Close. “Dropped third strike” is a misnomer. It’s a un-caught third strike. The difference being, and this doesn’t apply to this play, is if the ball skips and then is “caught” by the catcher, the catcher must still tag the runner out.

6.05 A batter is out when— … (b) A third strike is legally caught by the catcher…

6.09 The batter becomes a runner when— … (b) The third strike called by the umpire is not caught, providing (1) first base is unoccupied, or (2) first base is occupied with two out…

When rewatching, I realized the losing coach is walking out to argue while the other team is still circling the bases. This falls on him.

Here’s an article about it which gives more details. FWIW, this is by no means an “obscure” rule to anyone who has played baseball, or descendants of Mickey Owen (ok, maybe that is an obscure reference for anyone under 50).

How did his Tommy John surgery turn out?

It was a knuckle curve, smart arse. The delivery was exactly the same as his fast ball.

Kind of surprised that I have seven downvotes here. I mean a win is a win but do you really want to tell your kids “So I’m up to bat with all the pressure on and you know what I did? I struck out and then ran the bases while the other team celebrated”

I love the coach arguing with the umpire when it’s his and his team’s own fault.

That was not arguing. That was a man discussing with the umpire that his team done goofed

Would you mind getting on base if the other team made a physical error?

What a terrible article. Has that guy never watch baseball in his life? That rule comes into play almost every game at least once or twice.

“So what rule is that?”

“I could strike out and it wouldn’t matter”

I mean you can’t tell the story without talking about how you failed and then won on a technicality and 15-18 year olds being so excited that they won a state Championship that they got caught up in the moment.

Just saying like I said a win is a win but it would feel very cheap

Not nearly as much because that would mean I put the ball in play the fielder has to deal with the pressure of the situation and complete the play. If they overthrow or boot it it’s because they didn’t deal with the nerves as well as me.

The kid struck out, the catcher fielded the ball and thought in the excitement of winning a state championship that the signal was for the batter being out when he attempted the tag.

What if you swung at a curveball in the dirt that bounced away from the catcher? Would you tell them let’s do a do over instead?

Because you didn’t really do anything in that instance except swing at a bad pitch.

The needs a celebrated too early comment.

How does he round all 4 bases with the ball in the infield and no one notices

Something like that happened to the Brooklyn Dodgers against the Yankees in a world series in the 40s. With Brooklyn up one the catcher dropped the third strike of what would have been the final out of the top of the 9th inning of the 7th game and the Yankees went on to score several runs and win the game and series. That had to be heartbreaking

Edited to say I just saw someone already made a reference to this.
