this is a big deal. if the only way it passes is by rushing it, it shouldn't pass.

Rushing it?

They start politicking for a new city in 2014. Before that they were trying to get an ISD.

This is not a new issue. It's not complicated.

I do agree it needs to be debated, but seven months? No, two is plenty.

The governor cannot pick the day of the election. The law is CLEAR that the governor SHALL determine if it the petition has complied with the law and he SHALL call a special election and it SHALL be on the next available date. All he can do is drag his feet on certifying the petition and, make no mistake, if that petition was out of order, he'd have already been in front of a camera letting everyone know. If he drags his feet too long, I promise you there's an elected district judge just itching to sign a court order compelling him to do what the law requires of his office. I figure at this point that Edwards knows that this election is going down and is working out the softest landing possible for himself in this matter. He's got a lot of stupid people screaming at him to do illegal things that he's got to placate because they're his base.

"§3. Governor's determination; special election

A. Upon receipt of the certificate from the registrar of voters, the governor shall determine if the petition complies with the provisions of this Subpart, including the requirement that in excess of two hundred inhabitants reside in the area proposed for incorporation. If the governor finds that there has been compliance with the provisions of this Subpart, he shall call a special election to be held on the next possible date for special elections specified in R.S. 18:402."

Period.

Broome’s letter doubles down on similar sentiments the Baton Rouge Area Chamber made in its letter to the governor on Monday asking that the election take place in October along with the statewide elections.

this is the only real angle. this is about turnout

if JBE sells out to try to torpedo St George he's likely losing all of that purple-GOP support he got to defeat Vitter

*ETA: while the turnout only matters within SG, having the more widespread turnout will create the type of brow beating, protest, accusations of racism, etc that Broome needs to try to guilt enough white voters into voting to remain

Whose fault is that?

If you’re against something that’s coming up for a vote and you KNOW it’s coming up for a vote and you CHOOSE to not go vote, that’s on YOU.

Let the St. George experiment go forward, the people who vote for it can deal with the consequences.

She wants this to be pushed back to the gubernatorial election time so there will be more turnout among blacks.

Right, and all the effort has been to get the petition approved and an election set.

It's like the dog that caught its' tail. Now what? It seems like there are a lot of questions out there regarding how exactly the city will work, tax rates, etc.

I don't think 2 months is enough. I think 7 is too many, but I don't think there is an election date between them?

St. George City Hall doesn’t have to be fully operational the day after the election.

Somewhat related to this, but I noticed they have started to work on the new Jefferson Terrace School property now. I know it's in the future St. George so I'm curious if anyone has any current updates for this. Thanks.

What else would you expect from a mayor that stands to lose control over a HUGE swath of her parish?

STG knows that their base is much more electrified to vote in May than the opponents base. Mayor knows her only hope to defeat STG is to put it on a major election day

I don't agree that property taxes will double or triple with the passing of St. George.

I don't buy the St. George claim that they will be able to establish a functioning and great ISD without raising property taxes. They will, probably similar to Zachary. But certainly not double or triple. Now with the closure of the plants, Zachary is having to raid rainy day funds to stay afloat. Will see what they become in 2-3 years.

Can you imagine paying state income tax, high tax rates, then paying a property tax triple what it is now? Who would want to move to St. George for that?

True. And no doubt, a lot of things won't be figured out until they elect a mayor and city council and they get to work.

But people have to have a general understanding of what to expect.

of course she does. she needs time for her and her cronies to rig the election in their favor. you know, bus in people off the streets in North BR, the nursing homes, and sign up dead people to vote.

it's not easy rigging elections folks. takes time and tax payer money to cheat tax payers.

Double and tripled property taxes is absurd.

The way I see it with SG the city, there is enough tax money.

With a SG ISD there may be a need to raise school taxes depending upon how many students apply initially and how fast attendance grows.

This component is really complicated. How many students sign up initially and where do they reside is huge.
