We aren’t draconian about marijuana. She didn’t get caught in Mississippi or Tennessee. She got caught in Russia. This isn’t about intent or even the weed, it’s about Russia publicly humiliating an American “celebrity”. If she were higher profile, it would probably be even worse.

Day started bad eith election results but suddenly took a turn for the best. Nice work OP.

What happens when she gets home and finds out that her wife, and the wife's new girlfriend have snorted all of her savings, and she is too old to play any ball?

As far as I’ve seen, Griner has not once said she didn’t know she was breaking the law. I’m assuming considering how strict Russia is on this, she was briefed and briefed WELL.
So it’s pretty damn hard to feel for someone that knowingly broke the law

You noticed that too, huh?
I think the sentence was excessive, but then again I think in American terms regarding criminal justice. The Russians, and most other nations, are significantly more severe in this regard.
She should have made wiser decisions when traveling internationally. This is a very hard way to discover that the United States is an exceptional nation and natural/unalienable rights of the individual are not recognized in the rest of the world.
The Schadenfreude is tempting, and a lot of us are falling into that soulless pit, but this is truly a sad situation for her. I cannot, in good conscience, take extreme joy in her predicament despite her guilt regarding the charges and her political leanings.
Those of a different political bent, in the meantime, are quite satisfied to see American citizens held in confinement and brought up on unfounded charges of sedition in relation to Jan. 6, 2020 simply because they wallow in the guilty pleasure of seeing the misery of those with whose political ideology they disagree.
And....... I',m starting to go off on a tangent and begin preaching here. I think now's a good time to cease my further commentary on the situation.

Will she cherish the freedoms of the US when she returns?

It’s not that we’re draconian about weed. We just like seeing mouthy rug munchers put in their place.

It’s not that I take joy in her predicament. She and her type just piss me off. Disrespectful of the flag and demonizing her country instead of trying to make change in a positive and constructive way. So instead of having joy over her experience my attitude toward her is….frick off. I don’t give a shite about your situation.

You missed the part where the current admin started defaming the legal system in Russia, then when a General from Russia spoke out about it and warned the admin to stop; the admin doubled down and went as far as calling it a farce. Of course, the Russians were going to double down on the penalty.
Funny thing is, with some of the laws still on the books at the time, she may have broken some State & Federal laws if she would have traveled from Russia to the US with the same quantities.

To me it’s sad that Americans will divide themselves on racial and political lines over something like this. From what i’ve read, Griner drank the woke kool-aid and was downing whites/males/America in general. Now the people she was downing are laughing at her getting sent to the Gulag over a small-time infraction. The Russians are probably sitting back with popcorn laughing at us as we help destroy our country.

When considering her "excuses", the big thing that is being ignored is that this was to be her 7th year playing in Russia. Does anyone really believe this was the first time she brought weed into the country? She only did it one time & got caught this one time?

Read the first sentence i quoted. She is the one that made it political and racial

As much as I agree with that, i don’t want to be like her, just from a different side. I feel like we are all being manipulated. What she did was wrong but what’s being done to her is, too.
RTA are we Americans first or are we white/black/liberal/conservatives above all else?

That's a great question, KT. She was close friends with her team's owner. The owner was close friends with Pootin'. The owner refused to turn over all of his money to finance the war, so Pootin' was pissed. She was used to doing as she damn well pleased and came strolling through, brimming with entitlement, at a bad time.
Then, Dementia Joe ran his addled mouth at a bad time and was successfully able to double her sentence. It probably doesn't help that the white house says she is Unjustly Imprisoned, once a week. They also will not say that she did it. they say that Russian police say she did it, glossing over her admitting to being caught red-handed. Keep whacking that hive.
