He should have been brought up on state murder charges only.
"Hate crime" charges are bullshite. The only relevance his "hateful" motivations should have is as to his intent for the purposes of determining level of murder charge, and nothing more.

in these particular cases where there is indisputable evidence, they really should expedite the death sentence. no appeals, etc needed, just get it done asap.

I do think the state should have tried and convicted him of the actual murders first before going to federal court.

Thing is, that if a white person had gone into a black church in 1890 and just murdered 9 innocent, church going black people - including the pastor - in cold blood, he would have been hung. There were a lot of racial atrocities and oppression and wrong things happening, but this wouldn't have been tolerated even under Jim Crow. Not this.
