After voting last week to support union leaders' call for a strike, Baton Rouge's bus system workers emphasized their threat of walkout to the Capital Area Transit System Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night if their demands for higher wages and improved safety are not met.
Union members called out management and said CATS leadership had been unresponsive to their pleas and had not taken recent negotiations for a new contract with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1546 seriously.
"I've been here for 10 and a half years. The struggle is real." union member and CATS operator Falesha Augustus said through tears outside Tuesday's meeting. "I put a lot into CATS. Now all I can do is pray and hope that God fixes it before ATU have to take to the street."

Union members — who were joined by representatives of the NAACP, AFL-CIO, Together Baton Rouge and others — donned bandages on their faces inside the board room, signifying the "the hurt caused by CATS management."

While the board met privately in executive session, more than five dozen protesters chanted "ATU" and "We move this city" outside

Matt Wood, Louisiana AFL-CIO secretary and treasurer, puts on a bandaid while chatting with George Decuir, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1546 president, at the CATS headquarters on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The bandaids represents the workers being tired of being “beat up” by CATS management, a union member said.

Isn't CATS grossly overfunded already?
If they don't feel adequately compensated, maybe they should forego their union dues and save a little money.

That’s one thing the taxpayers and CATS employees can agree on. CATS is a corrupt bureaucratic boondoggle.

Happy to say I have never boarded a CATS bus and have no intention of ever doing so.

In a statement read during the meeting, board President Melissa deGeneres called CATS employees the "backbone" of the organization and assured them the board "understands the seriousness of the situation," while noting CATS' current financial situation.
"Pre-COVID, we served 200,000 riders per month. Today, that number has dropped to 120,000 riders per month," she said. "While we are committed to maintaining our workforce, we must be mindful of the financial constraints we are operating under as a public agency."
So they have 120k riders a month which is approximately 1.4 million riders a year.
According to this:
quote:
The Capital Area Transit System (CATS) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, operates buses Monday through Friday from 5 AM–11 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 6 AM–9 PM
CATS operates 18 hours a day Monday to Friday and 15 hours Saturday and Sunday for a total of 120 hours a week.
120 hours a week times 52 weeks = 6,240 hours a year
That equates to CATS averaging 224 riders per hour, city wide on all their buses
It looks like CATS runs 25 different routes throughout the city.

That means, on average, each bus route averages less than 9 riders an hour. (224 total riders per hour / 25 routes = 8.96 riders)
So what is CATS spending to ferry 224 riders an hour?
According to this:

CATS budget for this year is almost $49 million.
So CATS is spending $49 million to give rides to 1.4 million riders which equates to $35 a rider.
What a fricking scam

These motherfrickers don't move shite. Those busses are virtually empty. People with jobs can't use them because it takes three goddamn hours to get anywhere.

A rider takes the bus to work in the morning then takes the bus home. How is that calculated 1 rider or 2 ?
I would guess if this data comes from Cats is, well you understand.

You move maybe 1000 people a day

$23m of $45m come from property taxes.
Only $2m is revenue generated from the bus operating itself.
Less then 5% generated from operating the bus. 95% from taxes…….

With $1.1 million in fare revenue listed, and a single ride full fare $1.75 the math scale doesn’t really work out.
They would roughly need 500k riders at $1.75 for $875000 and what, another 900k riders as “transfers” at .25c for the other $225k to make the total 1.4 million passengers.
Nahhh

They move this city?
Not much from what I’ve seen. Most of their busses are parked all day at Cortana and Mall Of Louisiana and marked “out of service”.
