Nope, I bet you're right there. Somebody posted an animation a bit after my post. The kid reached into the back over the seat, the seat flipped with him, and he ended up wedged between the top of the seat and the back of the car. Crazy.

I watched that. But you know, the only way that could have happened is if the rear seat had not been fully locked back into place after the last time they folded it. Otherwise, it would have to have been folded forward first, then back.

Here is how they say it happened. Animation of accident

If this was how it happened how could the police not see him if they looked inside?

Awful either way

The cop apparently saw a minivan, looked into it and determined that no one was inside. Didn't realize that the kid was folded underneath the floor

The cop is going to feel like shite the rest of his life.

It's pretty wild. Who would think something as innocuous as this would end up taking some kid's life?

if the animation is correct, how could the kid not have just walked the seat back up using his arms? just push up off the floor and then off the back glass?

I've never called 911 before, but wouldn't this be one of those instances where the dispatcher should have stayed on the phone/onstar with the kid until the police arrived. And, if it was onstar, don't majority of their commercials show them staying with the victim until the police arrive.

Well, his tennis crap presumably was all still back there. He probably didn't have a way to position his arms to do that. Don't you think he tried everything conceivable to get out of it?

I don't think the Honda minivan has on-star. I don't think any vehicles with On-Star have a way to call from underneath a seat.

But I agree that the dispatcher should have stayed on the phone with an obviously scared child until help arrived. I can't believe he/she didn't give the make/model information to the responding officers. That's absurd.

And if the graphic is correct, the officer would have seen the child struggling just by looking at the car.

So, he was failed by 911 twice, I would have called mom, dad, my friends, anyone, everyone till someone came by.

Also, if I'm a cop knowing someone is trapped, don't you tap on the glass or anything on every minivan in the parking lot?

From what I’ve read this kid did suffer from some pretty severe spine issues. Incredibly sad and 911 completely failed this family.

we had a 2004 Odyssey and to get the back seat to fold down there is a latch that you have to pull up that releases the seat from the floor of the van. he must have snagged the latch with his tennis crap as he was pulling it out and then went over. crappy way to die!

He told the dispatcher that it was a gold Honda Odyssey, and exactly where it was. Both the dispatcher and cops didn't take it seriously. I'd bet the cops didn't even drive around the parking lot. Maybe they didn't even show up. I'd bet actual dollars they didn't get out of the car if they did show up.

What else is weird is that when you call 911 on your cell phone, it turns on your GPS (or it has for all of my phones since probably '08), and the dispatcher can see exactly where you are. The dispatcher will also know where you are based on triangulation of towers

Yeah, that's believable, but you could call other people with Siri too. I can't imagine sitting there for 30 minutes between calls.

Dispatch probably told him to stay on the line, "I'm here with you..." or something of that nature. See it on those TV shows all the time.

This is accurate. It's also possible that the graphic is wrong, and he broke the seatback while leaning over it, getting trapped upside down like in the image.

Either way, those old Odysseys have a crazy deep luggage well. I don't understand why he was trying to dangle over the seat for the stuff, instead of opening the back.

So why not use it to call his dad?

I'm not understanding how he could get calls out to 911, but not to anyone who could save him.

Will Siri call other people besides 911 when locked? I thought I read somewhere that you can summon Siri by saying "Hey Siri" and then ask it to call 911, even if it's locked.

If he couldn't reach the phone or was unable to press the buttons to unlock it, he might've been able to only dial emergency services using voice command. And he probably assumed somebody would send help, especially after the second call to 911 when he described the vehicle.
