Frick this story sucks. Soooo much bad luck for the kid here.

Yes the dispatchers get a lot of calls that may be pranks or not emergencies, but shite this kid said he was trapped in a car. That doesn't seem like a likely pranks to me, and more importantly seems very likely to be a legit call.

Considering it was a good 2002 mini van, I'm hoping that was discussed with dispatch. Seems pretty damn suspect they heard him say 'tell my mom I love her' but not give other information specific to the car.

What a terrible way to die though.

He had a physical disability too (they haven't specified so far).

He looked very young and sounded very young in the 911 call (which I wish I could unhear now).

From the press conference today.

The first call was reported to the police by the dispatcher as "unknown trouble" involving a van. (the boy used Siri voice activation, could not reach his phone, could not hear the dispatcher trying to communicate, and didn't give much info) Dispatcher note said he might be in the parking lot of the thrift store across the street (which is not where the van was located). They talked to the sheriffs deputy who does traffic patrol after school. He says he spotted a van over there and looked inside, but didn't see anyone. The police didn't see any "trouble" at the school, so they closed the incident.

A different call center person took the second call. The boy still could not hear or answer any questions, but he provided the make, model, and color of the vehicle. The information was NOT immediately relayed to the police, who were still at the school.

The kids parents were called that night, after he had missed his tennis match. They used tracking on the phone to locate the van.

FWIW, this school has several different parking lots, and the police didn't have much information. The first dispatcher, had called the phone back, but, of course didn't receive an answer. No word on why dispatch didn't use emergency location to tell the cops where the phone was, or why they didn't relay all of the information once it was received. At this point, it seems like it's really the dispacher's fault, much more than the police.

Someone earlier in the thread stated dispatch never gave the cops the description of the vehicle.

Awful. That animation clears a few things up. Poor kid.

No it doesn’t. It makes it even more confusing. How would no one see him if he’s pinned into the back window?

So you're willing to potentially excuse the fact that the cops didn't do their job after they had the exact location/make/model/color of the van because the more prudent course of action to retrieve the tennis gear was using the rear doors rather than climbing over the seats?

There aren't any questions to be answered before throwing the cops under the bus. Who gives a shite how the kid got there? The cops were alerted he was there and did nothing about it.

I'm saying were there other minivans in the area? I'm saying were they given correct information to begin with? Is there a recording of what they were given and was it accurate? Everyone assumes that a panicked 16 year old would give perfect directions even though he wasn't able to help himself. Very few situations I have been in have been so severe that I wasn't able to find a way to help myself. Maybe the kid told him another spot by mistake and the cop went by and looked at it and didn't see anything. maybe the cops did nothing at all. I don't know.

how heavy can a seat be and why didn't he call anyone else?

To be fair to the deceased, what do you always tell someone who can't get ahold of you for an emergency?

"Why are you calling me? Call 911"

They failed this kid and there needs to be consequences.

Sounds like Siri was used. Phone was likely in kids pocket, he was able to press the apple button and tell Siri to call 911, but was not able to take phone out of his pocket most likely. Damn this sucks.

So he couldn't hear the dispatch.

You'd think he'd say "stuck in gold van, stuck in gold van, stuck in gold van". But who knows. Damn, sucks.

ETA: I'm putting more fault on police here than dispatch. Police should have heard both calls from dispatch right? Isn't that over the radio?

If calls went to 2 different dispatches, was it just bad luck no one heard BOTH reports between dispatch and the police? With multiple calls, I'd think someone would have known it was serious.

He could've just used Siri to call his parents instead. Or maybe the dispatcher should've tracked down his phone

Until we know how and where the vehicle was parked, we can't assess that. I was merely pointing towards how exactly he got pinned. Can't answer to why no one saw him.

ETA: I know he was in the overflow lot. Maybe the lift gate was pulled up to a tree or a retaining wall or something dumb like that. If anything, that would help explain why it is he decided to try to grab it from inside the van instead of opening the lift gate like most would do.

Are dispatch considered cops?

Maybe not, but what about the officers sent out to the van and did nothing but let the kid die?

You clearly did not read the new conference post.

It’s a terrible situation, but it’s not the cops fault this time as bad as you and many would like it to be. They went with what they had. People will literally take any excuse to blame the cops.

The cop will have to live the rest of his life knowing he didn't do enough to save this kid's life. That's the only blame that really matters.

Is there a new timeline? Why didn't the kid call someone else? Maybe he did call his parents? or some other family? Or a friend?

The first 911 was shortly after 3 and the second at 3:25. So even if the first was at 3:15 i'm assuming he had some time to call someone else?

Even be here.

The cop is the one that has to live with it. Not me. You know the cop feels guilty.

It is a terrible situation and the cops had one job. They didn't do it and the kid died.

Cops aren't infallible as some of you like to think. Hell, if it was black kid who died like this, you would be blaming him with the ever intelligent "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" mantra.
