So how much of a raise would they have gotten? Whats the average salary now and what would it have been?
JP's new guy comes from deSoto Parish.

40k (about the median) for a teacher is really about 55-60k when you factor in the 15-17 weeks off that they get every year. Much more for administration and coaches who do more than the standard rank and file teacher. Imagine that, they get paid more too.
Lets not pretend they aren't compensated well given the amount they work.

That's a huge bump.
LA ranks 37th for average teacher salaries, but 17th for new teacher salaries.
Rather than raising all salaries like that, I wish they would take any new money and invest it in the veteran teachers who deserve it.

This is going to happen in Texas sooner or later. The defeated bills Sunday have teachers royally pissed for the most part.

I thought the state raises there were a done deal?

Yeah, seems like the school board got greedy - that's way too big of a raise and a tax increase to put through all at once.
It's approx $260 for every 100K in value above 75K.

The funny thing is that only 34% of registered voters in the parish actually voted in that large of a landslide.
Where were all of their mommas and diddys at? Grandmaws and pow pows? Spewing shite to their faces, but stayed in the bed Saturday morning because they dont want their property taxes to increase just so Ashley can get a few more bucks to spend at StrangeBrew on the weekends.

They knew how much they were making when they entered the field... it's not up to property owners to pay 24% more because they decide to bitch about it now. Bossier is the only parish to my knowledge to propose something this insane.

Also look at Caddo and Webster revenue/student. Almost the exact same as Bossier's, they pay teachers 5 to 7% more.
Student enrollment in Bossier is up 15.2% in the last 10 years.
BPSB employees are up more than twice that amount. Seems like their beef needs to be with administration. Striking really only hurts the students and families.

Since when has teaching public school been considered something that should be a lucrative career?

i understand what you are saying, but that "factoring in" doesn't make that money magically appear... they are still not getting paid during that time... and i know the rebuttal will be "well, get a 2nd job during the summer", which some do, but it's not quite that simple... not very many places that pay well are going to hire someone, knowing they are only going to be there for 15-17 weeks, and that's it...
in reality, at the end of the day, they actually only make the stated amount, not the "factored in" amount...
and yes, there is opportunity to "do more" but even if every single teacher at whatever school wanted to, there aren't enough spots... there is only one head coach of each sport, a few assistants of each sport, etc...
not to mention, teachers have to spend a lot of money out of pocket to cover supplies, when shite runs out and there's no money from the school to buy supplies... imagine you had to start buying all the paper at your office when it runs out all of sudden... think that would put a dent in your bottom line, eventually? i bet it would...
teachers do not get paid commiserate with how important their job really is... sorry, they just don't...

Well that is the problem. I paid/pay for it and never used it because I sent my kids to private school (K-12).
It was not fun busting my arse and making financial sacrifices for 25 years just to send three kids to a private school that was not much better than most public schools in Texas.
Do I get some sort of property tax credit from the parish/state if I want my kids to be safe?

I'm sick of ALL teachers. Your liberal asses knew what the job paid when you decided to go into teaching. Don't bitch to me about how much it pays. I can't wait for the opportunity to VOTE IT DOWN!
