Bossier teachers are possibly planning a strike or walkout

This is what the teachers are bitching about:
Bossier shoots down two school district tax proposals
If the vote would’ve been the other way around Bossier would’ve seen at least a 24% tax increase. And a PAC claimed a 40% tax increase realistically.

This weekend, Bossier Parish residents voted down pay raises for Bossier Parish School teachers, as well as a proposal to increase Bossier Schools technology funds. The measures were both voted down by more than 74% of the vote.

Today teachers and students returned to classrooms for the first time to since the vote. As the schools kickoff Teacher Appreciation Week, some of those teachers are talking about a strike. Multiple sources inside Bossier School classrooms are telling KEEL News that teachers are talking about a full scale strike, or at least a walkout. The idea of a "sick out" has been suggested as well.
quote:
Jackie Lansdale, the President of the Red River United Teacher's Union, joined KEEL News this morning to talk about what the vote said to Bossier Teachers. Lansdale spoke with KEEL News later in the day as well, after it became clear that Bossier Teachers were discussing the possibility of a strike. When asked about the possibility of a teacher walk out, Lansdale said:
"I think it'd be fair to say you can look for something this week. If it happens."
When Lansdale was asked if it would be a large group of teachers taking a "work action", she said:
"What we're just starting to see is it boil up. You know, it started boiling up after the election. Now I would tell anyone to go back and look at a West Virginia, or a Kentucky, or Colorado...those things are pretty organic. Those are usually when teachers just finally say, and school employees say, 'look that's enough'. And that's really what you saw, and that's what I'm seeing. I'm seeing this bubble up from the school side up."

Bossier shoots down two school district tax proposals
quote:
Bossier Parish voters shot down two proposed 10-year property taxes Saturday.
A 22.94-mill levy for raises for teachers and other school employees failed by a margin of 27% saying yes to 73% who voted no, according to complete but unofficial election results.
And with a margin of 26% saying yes and 74% saying no, voters also rejected the 3.22-mill levy for technology improvements in the parish’s schools.
Both proposals sparked debate among educators, business and other property owners in the months leading up to the election.
If the vote would’ve been the other way around Bossier would’ve seen at least a 24% tax increase. And a PAC claimed a 40% tax increase realistically.

Yeah, Bossier residents and businesses will not play along with that shite.

That's a huge tax increase. I don't blame them for voting it down. I would have as well and I am a teacher.

I've read the charts, and where American Children/HS Kids are, compared to rest of world, and i'd say these teachers have been on a sick out for years.

The community gives a resounding "NO" so they threaten with a strike?
They can be replaced.
They can be replaced.

Let them strike. They'll find out that most people don't care (just like the government shutdowns).

My mom’s a teacher, she voted it down.

Yeah this was pure propaganda. It was a 40% increase on the portion that goes to the school board specifically. They made it seem like your total property tax bill would go up 40%.

Strike at the end of the school year. Good plan.

Sure. They can strike June-August

And Bossier is one of the better performing parishes in the state when it comes to academics. But that’s like being the smartest retard.

don't you think a teacher strike would have more impact during the middle of the school year and not when the teachers are about to get 2 months paid time off

Ok, either way, if it was a 25% increase like Bobby Edmiston claimed, that’s still a fricking hefty increase all at one time.
frick that noise.

Oh yeah either way it was a big lick, but there was some frickery going on.

Property tax would have gone up ~24%.

Please let these fools strike when the school board has over two months to find their replacements. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

I don’t understand it. Did they think teaching was a lucrative career choice?

We're seeing it now.
First, they try to pass a sales tax increase, which affects everybody. Of course, that gets voted down into oblivion.
Next, they go after property taxes, which on the surface, doesn't seem to affect everyone. This has a much better chance of passing because of all the "non-property" owners saying, "sure, make 'them' pay it."
All the while, it gets passed on to everyone anyway.
You have to have skin in the game to make good decisions.
This game will continue until everyone finally wakes up and realizes that the main issue is a budget and spending problem.... and the government can't do anything more efficiently than private businesses.
(Another example of having skin in the game versus not.)

how narcissistic do you have to be to think people wanna pay 24% more taxes so you can get a raise while working 3/4 of the year??
