Yeah that isn't how it works.
Every job, position, and company is different.
There are thousands of people at my company with company phones that are not expected to answer emails on the weekends.

That's ridiculous. If something is important enough to merit a response on the weekend then I expect a call or text. Email on the weekend is not the avenue to address immediate concerns. I would question the competence of my manager if he treated it as such.

I'm making the argument that you shouldn't send important correspondence after business hours and especially not when you're supposed to be sleeping because there is a pretty high likelihood that they'll get overlooked.
I just don't understand this argument. When you check your email Monday morning, why does it matter when an unread email came in? Double, triple checking?

no one said you are expected to reply immediately....however if I send you an email regarding an assignment or meeting that needs to be addressed on Monday and I send you an email over the weekend I expect you to look at your email on Sunday in preparation of the next workday/workweek and plan accordingly....and sending an email back to me letting me know that you've received the instructions is not out of line
Im not sure about the rest of you but I take about 15-30 minutes every Sunday afternoon to catch up on weekend emails as well as plan out my work week.....makes Mondays much more manageable.

I work for a global company and send emails whenever I want. Late night, weekends, whenever I am working on something. I dont expect a response until working hours in whatever local country the recipient is in. However I send and receive whenever I am online, which is daily. On weekends less frequently.

I pretty much always glance at my work phone when I get a notification. Or if I'm out without it, when I come back I'll do a quick scan to see if something needs to be addressed.

So you received so many work related emails over the weekend that your boss's email got swept away? Did you respond to any of the other hundreds of work emails you were sent Saturday and Sunday?

This sounds like an issue on your part. Maybe your boss felt like getting something done at that time. It's not his fault that you can't keep your inbox organized. I guess he could schedule the email to go out on Monday, but that still doesn't excuse you from missing it. You are making it sound like he didn't expect an answer over the weekend, so, he sounds pretty reasonable to me.

This is how the low man works. If you are a “team member”, “support staff”, bitching about not getting a promotion, scared you are gonna get layed off this how you work.
If you want to valued and advance in your career you respond to that email at a reasonable time. I take calls on the deer stand, answer emails from the boat, check voicemails while at a ballgame.
Or if you are happy being a sheep, keep giving minimal effort to your employer and hope the grass doesnt run out

Confused again. E-mails don't disappear just because they're sent during non-business hours. What kind of weird arse email client do you use?
