Maybe find a homeless shelter and give it to the needy?

That’s why I always update my death-in-the-family registry at Target.

We donated some food we received and also gave some to housekeepers and some other folks with big families. We froze what we could freeze as well. People were very generous.

I stopped bringing food for folks who I knew would get a lot. I bring paper products like toilet paper, napkins, paper plates, paper towels, plastic utensils, bottled water.... Those items have been well received and saved the folks from having to go buy them.

if you are ok then thats good for you, but many people have a really hard time with such things and the last thing on their minds or ability to deal with is cooking food.

donate the extras to a local food shelter, or just ask the neighbors if they can help you by taking some of it off your hands. worst case is just start putting it in the freezer, its not like it wont come in handy later on

Sorry for your dad.

For being The Walrus, you don’t seem to be aware of a thing called freezers

“Sorry your dad died, here’s $25 to Movie Tavern.”

Look in the obituaries and find another family near you who lost a loved one and re-gift the food you don’t want.

As a bonus, pose as a long lost child or lover, either to cash in on that sweet inheritance money, or just stir up drama.

Well, I guess it more of a boomer generation thing. Everyone thinks that you will have a huge amount of people at your house for 2-3 days. That is usually what happened back in the day. So they figure they will help feedin a lot of people. Its a thoughtfull gesture, dont take it any other way.

Same here. I just didn't really give a shite about eating anything when my dad passed away nearly 30 years ago. I understand people wanting to be helpful and express their love and concern, but all I wanted at the moment back then was to be left alone to reflect on what a wonderful father he had been and to deal with the shock of that completely unexpected loss.

It’s their way of helping. Throw it out if you need to. It’s a great reminder that people care about you.

this custom definitely predates baby boomers, by decades if not centuries

Indeed. Also consider the wake was usually held in the house, and people would be traveling to pay their last respects.

Restaurants and lodging weren’t as widely available so it wasn’t uncommon to be feeding people for a week or more.

This is a cultural holdover of earlier times that may not prove quite as practical nowadays, but is fueled by a genuine sentiment.

I get what you are saying, and the downvotes are a result of poor wording. When my MiL died recently, some in my family sent gift cards to local restaurants so we could order food when we needed to. They did so for this very reason; too much food can be sent at one which leads to waste.

None of this was asked for from us nor expected; it just arrived with a text from those who sent it. It is meant to help get through the next several days, because cooking is the last thing you have time for.

I don't think you are as selfish and greedy as you OP sounds, so I am attempting to offer a little clarity for you.

You have my prayers for your loss. I lost my dad 10 years ago, and I still have moments of terrible sadness. The hurt fades to the background in time, but it never truly goes away.

Google how to freeze. You can pretty much freeze anything if you do it right.

Will be great to have when you have nothing ready to just thaw out a meal.
