The first I remember this happening was the VA Tech shooting. people were putting VA Tech ribbons as their fb picture. A lot of lsu students did it but we were actually playing them in football so it made a bit of sense there.
This was back when Facebook was just college students.

When I had social media I never changed my profile for an event.
Not ever. I never “stood with” anyone. I never changed to a flag, of any nation.
I never made a background change for any social Movement.
