The idea of coffee shops being a liberal protective bubble from the racism of the outside world is an imaginative one.
The idea that a Fortune 500 company with a cultural identity of a caffeinated liberal island would not take measures to protect its brand, is naive.
Starbucks is not doing the work of healing or restoration. It’s doing the work of capitalism. Same as every other business that relies on mocha colored hands or caramel colored hands or whole milk colored hands to keep giving dollars to its registers.
We cannot be so quick to assume the righteousness of corporations. We can demand that they invest in communities they discriminated against. Or that they diversify their shareholders. Or that they make their senior executives mirror the vastness of demographics they service.
Equity does not look like prepared statements of apologies or one day trainings. That’s public relations. At a minimum equity looks like overhauling any corporate values that alienate any potential consumer. It looks like honoring the revenue you receive by honoring the humanity of anyone who steps in your place of business.
