Of course they did because they are "enlightened" or "diverse" or "inclusive" or whatever buzz word they use now. People like that couple believe that expressing enough empathy toward a different group or culture somehow elevated them above the impacts of the differences between their group/culture and that of the group/culture they are knighting for.
This is same foundational logic many have in supporting socialism, that their support for it will somehow insulate them from the negative realities of it.
What the couple is experiencing is reality disabusing them of their self-induced illusions.
