$1k/month sounds about right for State offered plan. Our plan is through wife's work (teacher) and is a little more than that.

Such benefits are completely unsustainable and crushing cities/municipalities

No doubt. That's the reason I got out when I did. Lots of other city employees did the same around the time I left. It was all due to the uncertainty of our pensions at the time. They were paying out way more than what was being paid in and the city council started discussing votes on this and that and talks of unionizing and all sorts of BS. So myself and about 40 other civil servants got what we were eligible for based on time served and a couple other factors and got the hell out.

They ended up unionizing for a while and then ditched that shortly after. Not sure what exactly ever happened with that city's pension fund.

Does it mention they get OT pay, and can retire at 20 years with full pension?

You pay the same whether you have 1 or 10 kids BTW.

On their plan specifically? Most plans it’s 2+ kids that don’t matter

We need to pay our police and military way more. We get what we pay for with police and our military folks are just squeezing by. The two most important keepers of order are treated shabbily.

OT pay is the law, what are you implying? And they can't retire at 20 with 100%. I'd venture to say no one can. Even if they could, whats 100% after 20 years at that pay

How are they not getting paid time and a half for overtime ?

84 x 16.42 = 1379.28

In this case , shouldn't they be entitled to 4 overtime hours?

What is cut off in the above image, is the net pay for 84 hours worked came out to $639

The biggest takeaway from that ad is how expensive health insurance is.

The issue is most of these careers have scheduled retirement benefits built into their contracts that makes it hard to leave once you have put in at least 5 years into a career.

So lets say a new officer starts out on the job. They don't make much but they are single or newly wed, so they can make it work. They figure if they put in 20 years, they can retire somewhat comfortably with pretty decent benefits including health insurance.

Then they start having kids, need a bigger house, at some point need new cars, whatever. They start having to pull extra duties and/or side work to make ends meet and they are kind of stuck in their low paying job because if they leave, the years worked toward that long term retirement goal is lost.

It is the same situation that many teachers and fireman face. What you were getting paid when you started your career doesn't usually well translate later in life and it is very difficult to forecast those affects/changes when you are starting a new job.

Basically people are stuck in a career that isn't what they thought it would be when they started or doesn't allow for much growth for position/pay.

So when people on the outside looking in say things like "you knew what you were getting into when you took the job" or "find something else to do to make more money" it is a very uneducated and simplistic point of view that is generally pretty insulting to the people that are "stuck" in their careers.

I seriously doubt thats a post certified officers paycheck.

The paycheck is from a 10 year, POST certified officer with 2 kids. Rookies at DS make $14.59 prior to completing the police academy and $15.05 after completion of the FTO program.
The "other" section is 401K, short term disability,..etc".

According to FSLA law municipalities can work police officers 84 hours in a 2 week period without paying overtime. Therefore, those 84 hours are at a straight time rate.

Don't know where your info is from but municipal police in the state of Louisiana cannot retire with 100% until 30 years of service.

Isn't that the point though ? Aren't we trying to attract better candidates to important roles in our society?

Teachers and military being the other big example for me
