definitely not in any of our life times. US of A is it is today...probably not either.

We apparently dont have enough water on this planet, so if we find any there...we need to build one of the ships that transforms into a vacuuming maid like in Spaceballs.

To many of yall are stuck in "fantasy land" from all the comic books, and movies that "make up" stuff to be realistic enough about any of this. Book ends are to far apart for this. Both sides need to start coming together by taking some books (ie "ideas") from in between to find what is realistic.

There's your problem right there. Who is going to fund the terraforming of Mars? Who would govern it? We can't even balance our budget, not sure where we're going to come up with the bazillion dollars it would take to even begin this.

Say we are faced with a 100% extinction event in the next 100 years or so in advance it could and would happen.

I'm not talking about logistics. The argument in this thread is if its "possible" or not. I say yes.

Whether he's right or wrong, I don't care. Anytime you quote bill nye I immediately suspect the veracity and legitimacy of the article.

Here's a shot out of a cannon. Why don't we just put a huge straw like thing from our ozone up to mars. . . pump some oxygen up there? Would that work?

I'll agree that it's not out of the realm of possibility and to be fair all great achievements prolly sound ridiculous hundreds of years before they happen, but right now I don't see it happening. You're talking about substantially altering a planet, when we've never even been to the planet. I would think if it's possible it's gotta be thousands of years away.

Again, no one is talking about when this can happen. The argument against it in the thread is that if its possible or not. If it's 1000 years before it does, fine. It still works. And I think the timeframe will be way sooner than 1000 years.

Bill Nye has been butthurt the last few years. He had a good TV show for kids in the 90s. He's a hack. He's calling out Elon Musk when he says "are you high" and its an obvious stab at Elon because Elon is the one saying this Mars stuff and him smoking on the Joe Rogan show

Bill Nye calling out Elon Musk What have you done Bill? Elon has like 3 major initiatives to advance the human race. Don't you have a new science guy netflix show? Cool.

making Mars liveable

I've always thought this is a silly idea. The HUGE amount of resources that would go into making just one person able to live on Mars would be stupid to invest.

How about we just have less people here and manage our natural resources better?

For the first time in years I agree with Nye. What he says is true about Mars. And he didn't even mention the fact that Scientists think Mars lost all of this when its protective magnetic field collapsed billions of years ago, and solar wind – high-energy particles projected from the Sun – has been stripping the Red Planet's atmosphere away ever since. (copied and pasted last part).

You have to solve the lack of magnetic field first.

This doesn't mean I think we should VERY gradually try, but it isn't gonna be "inhabited" in less than 100-200 years. Alot of news inventions and processes will come out of the attempt

The thought behind this is an extinction level event.

Mars is a way to remotely backup the human race to the cloud.

If Earth gets smacked by an asteroid then we don't go the way of the dinosaurs in this case.

Somewhere along the line, Bill nye started buying into the nostalgia driven hype and started liking the taste of his own farts.

The surface gravity on Mars is only about 38% of the surface gravity on Earth

On the space station, astronauts lose 1% of their bone density every month. Good luck living on Mars. It ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

That dude can’t even grasp the fact that there are 2 genders. He should probably stick to middle school level science experiments.

Okay. But is he wrong?

There are only 4 months of the year in which the monthly average is above freezing (but not by much) and the average lows are between -90 to -123 and there is no evidence of water.

Earth's gravity is 9.8 m/s^2. Mars' gravity is 3.7 m/s^2.

It's not possible for life to exist on Mars. If it was possible, it would already exist.

I guess there is a way to create an artificial environment, but what happens when you run out of water? I am all for exploring ideas and it would be huge if there was other places, other than Earth, to sustain life, but Mars isn't that place.

Earths population will start shrinking in about 50-60 years. The growth rate is already dropping.

Why the frick does anyone care what the actor Bill Nye has to say? So what if he was an actor for a science tv show, that doesn't make him an expert in the field. In fact he is probably hurting the field more than he is helping it.

If it’s not there, you don’t really have many options.

Also, the lack of a magnetosphere complicates things. With the low gravity, You’ll lose atmosphere faster than you can generate it.

You know, kinda like what already happened to Mars?
