I disagree to a point. If possible it would take hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
First you would need a continual source of liquid water. This would be the toughest part as average non-polar temperatures can range from the upper 60's to lower -80's.
Next you need a plant that can survive in the Martian soil (NASA is already working on this).
The limiting questions are:
- How much time and effort would it take to reach a tipping point where the system could be self-sufficient?
- Would the change to a more oxygen-rich atmosphere ever bring the average temperature into a range that allowed for liquid water accumulation on the surface?
- Is there enough water below the surface that would thaw and create large-scale life-supporting amounts of bodies of surface water?

We are centuries away from the technology needed to terraform a planet.
The tech exists, it's just not exploitable...obviously terraforming must be tailored to the planet and Mars would likely require a fluorine scrubber of sorts to extract Oxygen from the ground. Which means we could conceivably build dome cities with current tech, but yeah, until we can fix the planet's natural protective system, it's pointless to fix the atmosphere anyway.

You guys bring politics into EVERYTHING... It's weird.

That's probably more of a pressure issue...
I'm not sure you need it on the surface as long as it's easily pulled from it's source (ice or underground)

Bill Nye says the idea of Mars colonization and terraforming – making a planet more Earth-like by modifying its atmosphere – is "science fiction."
Fake scientist

He’s right. We can’t even get off the planet at a reasonable price. Until we find a way into space cheaply humans are going to be firmly grounded here on Earth.

The world renowned scientist doesn't side with creationist!?!?! NO WAY

Scientists say no way
OT says bullshite, we're already doing it!
I'm with the OT

Well, Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer and entertainer.

I have to agree with my man here.

Questionable at both.

He worked for Boeing.
The mental gymnastics people do because he’s a “filthy lib” is comical.

Isnt he on the chinese payroll to push the global warming narrative in order to cripple our industrial outlook?

Ridiculous comparison. Humans are changing Earth negatively from normal human activities. To think that we could somehow change a planet to the very specific conditions required to facilitate life on a planet we've never even been to is absurd right now.
Honestly its not a good comparison but the arguments in this thread posted against it are just as weak.
If it's accepted that us as humans on this planet are negatively affecting the earth's climate "accidentally" or as a by-product of the industrial and technological revolution, then thinking if we poured resources, research, and 100% effort into doing the opposite on Mars to make us a bi-planetary species and essentially extend human life in the future is not that far fetched. If it's essential to extending and prolonging the species then why is is so far-fetched to think it could happen in 100 years?
If your stance is that we are messing up Earth from normal human activities, then a concentrated effort and unlimited resources from a global level trying to terraform a planet is not out of the realm of possibility.

If we need to design a highway for Mars we’ll call Bill Nye. Until then he should stick to being a fake scientist on Earth.

I didn't say anything about his politics. He practices very little STEM these days, and he comes across as a know-it-all. Not an engineer; not entertaining.

and unlimited resources
There's your problem right there.
Who is going to fund the terraforming of Mars? Who would govern it? We can't even balance our budget, not sure where we're going to come up with the bazillion dollars it would take to even begin this.

I'll agree that it's not out of the realm of possibility and to be fair all great achievements prolly sound ridiculous hundreds of years before they happen, but right now I don't see it happening. You're talking about substantially altering a planet, when we've never even been to the planet. I would think if it's possible it's gotta be thousands of years away.
