That ship that almost blew up did

Tell this story

A ship carrying some kind of hazardous/explosive cargo lost power in baton rouge and there was a lot of talk about if it had collided with a wharf or another vessel it would have been catostrophic.

I was in Pilottown hunting in the 80s and a couple of older pilots were talking about it.

Well, they were supposed to be 50-50ish but the white kids families had the means to put them in private school or leave the parish. So those schools stayed a neighborhood school.

Biggest What-Ifs in Baton Rouge history...
Once the Empires of France & Spain set it up and running, it was going to have a failing grade. (Like it does now) It was conceived and built on a faulty foundation.

Its arguable heyday was during Jim Crow days, so that wasn’t good for a segment of its population. It was good for the largest percentage of its folks though at that point. The high water level for BR.

It’s too disparate now, it won’t be better in our lifetimes. Terrible economics too.

Nothing over the past four decades makes me optimistic for it’s future.

Disney world is the obvious answer here

Disney was never going to be in BR. It was supposed to be in New Iberia. The haircut would have went world wide!

Sadly it was inevitable. The way those flood walls were designed, a storm was gonna come and knock them down one day. The ultimate “when, not if” scenario.

What if Huey Long did not believe every farmer could go to college by putting a directional university in every nook and cranny in the state?
