Is there a part of the constitution that says they can’t?

There probably is, but I’m pointing out your understanding of what the constitution is meant to do is lacking.

Biden said. “If I’m reelected, we’re going to make sure that rents are kept at 5% increase."
Equivalent of a junior high class president candidate saying “No more homework for evah!!”

I don’t see how this would even be legal.

Since when does that stop Biden?

What’s going to happen?

SCOTUS will rule it unconstitutional and he’ll ignore it anyway.

DOJ will not do anything about it and the RINOs in Congress are spineless.

Maybe they’ll strike down Wickard vs Fillburn

The constitution is meant to limit the power of the federal government.

It says what the government cannot do.

People say “10th amendment” but that shite gets hand waived all the time with the commerce clause.

Sounds like a good way to force every landlord to increase by 5% every year no matter what. Typical low level thinking.

Some amendments do, but the Constitution spells out what the govt can do - stating it that way was much more limiting.

Raising rents to reflect what people are willing to pay for a limited number of units is not price gouging. It is letting the market do what the market does.

Understood. Housing is touchy.

I know there isn’t gouging per se but if you have limited means of transportation, have a job close by where you rent, etc. you are at the mercy of the people charging rent. Especially when all the others are doing the same thing.

I’m not saying I’m for Biden idea. I’m just throwing some kinks into the situation.

Set the “Rent” super high and offer certain discounts..remove them later effectively raising the rent but not legally raising the “Rent”

Is he gonna cap property tax increases/utility rates/maintenance costs, etc too?

How about homeowners insurance and car insurance too?

No, people who feel powerless to change their situation just aren’t willing to sacrifice what it would take to do so.

Advertise discounted rental prices, remove discounts when you want to raise rent. The telecommunications companies been doing this forever.

“Rent is $1000 after discounts…”

1 year later…

“It looks like the owners are cutting some of the discounts, and the new rental price will be $1500 after the remaining discounts are applied”

Let's wait to see how rent control has kept the housing supply keeping up with demand in the US (decades of evidence shows otherwise.) Or we can just wait for the price crash in Barcelona. Sorry you hate tourists (seemingly mostly German and Russian), but you have a job at the coffee shop because of them.

$1,500 a month flat. $600 a month for access to the laundry room. $200 a week for a parking spot. Want to use the elevator, $50 a week. Use of the stairs, $25 a week. Mail delivery fee, $5 a day. QED.

This makes no sense and seems like it would just cause everyone to increase rents immediately to cover even the threat of this happening

Yup and then 5% every year just in case inflation spikes,

Discount for not a shitty credit score
Discount for clean criminal background
Etc.

Discounts be discriminatory. Breed of peace, credit score is no indication of how you pay your bills, etc.
