When is best time of year to scrape the topsoil to level the lawn? My lawn is bumpy as hell and I want to level it before planting some trees. TIA

I would consult the NFL. They seem on top of this kind of stuff.

I'd think now would be a good time since we still have a good 2 months of good grass growing to get through.
Total side note. My lawn got nailed by some freaking sod worms this year. I have 2 pretty big dead spots in my lawn to the point that it has to be re-sodded. The guy at my local garden center said it would be best to treat the worms now and plant the sod next spring. He said it's late in the year to be planting NEW sod. If it was just damaged it would be ok and would probably recover by the end of September. Sadly, that's not the case for me.

Do it earlier than spring. Will take longer than expected to level, get sod, etc. Now would be fine, unless you have a stick up your arse and cant stand having an impartial lawn this winter.

I would say around May/June

If I have St. Aug and rented a machine to level, would I still need sod? Seems like the St. Aug would grow back on it's own, no?

I just used sand to level out some rough spots I had after we put a pool in. It slicked it up real nice. Then we get a big rain and washed all my sand off the hill and made more bumps than I had before. Sorry I am of no assistance.

The equipment you want is a harley rake. Make sure you hire someone that has one. You are okay with sod this time of year. No seeding after mid July.
Harley Rake vs. Mexican with a shovel.

You would think, just stay on top of weeds/unwanted stuff

This is what I want to do. Level the top soil and let the grass grow back on its own.

I leveled my lawn last year because it was so bumpy. A couple of pieces of advice.
1. Fertilize right before you start leveling. So do it when the grass is actively growing.
2. Use masonry/play sand and not river sand. There are a good bit of tiny pebbles and a TON of weeds in regular river sand.
It is hard work so if you have a friend or two or a wife, it helps tremendously.
