I'm a lawyer, but I wouldn't mind getting out of the legal profession.

on education my kids are going to a private school no matter where I live so that's not a factor

Just curious, why? I mean if you lived in a good school district wouldn't you rather save the money?

1. North Carolina
2. Georgia
3a. Louisiana (New Orleans specifically)
3b. Tennessee (Nashville specifically)

Some important factors to me are climate, proximity to friends/family, natural beauty, and proximity to destinations (beach, mountains, big cities). If not for friends and family then Southern California would be high on my list.

IRL job is obviously high on the list as well.

I'm sure that law degree could translate into something in O&G

You don't have to have one extreme or the other.

I agree with this, but it's tough to find those perfect parts unless you have the cash and a lot of luck in the job market.

In late 20s, maybe someplace exciting (nitelife, food, sports, women), but I want a more casual place for raising a family in a lower population.

I also want
sports and outdoors like intramural or paddle boarding
educated and nice people
diverisity(asians, indian, blacks, mexicans) but also hot white women women for me
food , music, books, and casual feel

I did a backpacking trip along the Lost Coast and the trailhead was in a town with like 5 houses and one general store.

The Lost Coast is a refuge for misfits. Somewhere between Crescent City and the Oregon border, there's a place for me.
