re: Best States to live in the United States?

1. Virginia
I live in Northern Virginia and hate it. Employment opportunities and pay are pretty good, but cost of living is pretty outrageous. I'm up to $405,000 in bidding on an 1800 squarefoot walk-up in Alexandria (with street parking).

3. Washington
Still a legal resident of Washington State and absolutely loved NW Washington. The weather isn't for everyone, but I like temperate climates and don't mind clouds and rain. The summers are the most beautiful of anywhere I've been in the continental US. Cost of living is reasonable, lots of young, educated professionals, relatively low crime.

Based off where I've lived only:
1. Washington(I don't plan on leaving)
2. Hawaii
3. Northern California
Honorable mention- Arizona

People saying Louisiana do you honestly mean it or just have never left the state?
I have been to over a dozen countries on 3 continents. South Louisiana is one of the best places to live on planet earth for an average joe (i.e. not a multi-millionaire). Almost anything one wants is a short drive away. There's only a few things that would make it perfect:
better schools
less crime
skinnier women
a great beach (not counting Holly Beach, of course)
my parents not bugging me so much
getting Baton Rouge traffic under control.

What else do you hate besides the cost of living? Virginia is awesome. The only negative things I can think of are cost of living and the traffic.

If you hate it why are you bidding on a home?
I bought my home in Alexandria almost 3 years ago, but I have a garage

To each his own, but there are a lot of objective metrics that refute this claim. Just chalk it up to South La being home--a place you have loved ones and have made memories. I've done quite a bit of travelling myself and having visited a few times since 2003, couldn't imagine living there long term.

Traffic. Traffic cops.
But mainly cost of living. The summers are a little warm for my taste, but I'm loving the weather now.

But I forget shitting on La is the thing to do.
My bad, not shitting on LA, just saying I could think of multiple states that I would consider a better place to live.
I've had plenty of good times in LA, in fact I'm flying out tomorrow afternoon for the epic showdown of Tulane vs UConn game and spend time with some family.

Like?
I stated earlier and its been posted before, La is one of the happiest states. Why is that if its such a terrible place to live?

Traffic.

Traffic cops.
I guess my experience has been different than yours

Because I've spent $250,000 on rent since graduating from college. I'll be here for about 5 years and my realtors ensuring me there's no way I lose money on the purchase.

I can understand your issue with the traffic but traffic cops? You must have had a bad experience with one...

I don't drive as much as I used to and haven't gotten a ticket in the six months I've been back stateside, but I probably paid the state of Virginia $1500 between my time driving through here in college, interning in DC in 2004, and living in VaBeach in 2006.
They be mad cause I'm always stying on them and stuff.

No. Virginia statees are known for targeting out-of-state plates for their elaborate speed traps. Couple that with the fact that anything over 80mph is reckless driving (got one of those in college) and it's a pretty bad combo. I haven't been pulled over since I moved here in late March, though.
