I would have no problem living in the area of Dahlonega or Suches, Ga. Up in the mountains, lots of winding roads for motorcycle riding, mountain streams for canoeing, small town peace and quiet.

I've been to a few small towns in the Carolinas attending motorcycle rallies and loved my time spent in Lake Lure and Maggie Valley. There's lots of small towns I could easily settle in once the wife retires.

Wife and I took a long weekend trip to Dahlonega, GA last year. Not sure if it fits the bill here but you really aren’t that far from north Atlanta and the smokies just north.

Need more context on your opinion of what is a "relatively big town".

Also, I failed to mention in my previous comment, Greenville or Clemson SC. In the armpit between NGA and NC.

Why not Chattanooga? Great town that fits your general geographic area. Some very nice areas to live and it’s very up and coming city.

FWIW, I worked a couple of weeks in Columbia, SC before the storms last year. Hand to God--every service worker (cashier, server, attendant, hotel front desk, etc.) I encountered was African American or other minority. NTTAWWT.

Didn't actually notice it while I was there. It wasn't until I stopped at Chick-Fil-A in the Atlanta suburbs while driving back that I realized there was a significant deficit of Caucasian folks where I came from.

To be clear, I regularly work north BR, so I'm accustomed to being the only salt in the pepper shaker. Never had a problem--just seemed a little like home.

Those 5 are very good places. I have three sisters that live in Woodstock. I can visit each one by golf cart.

Southern North Carolina is South Carolina. There is no northern North Carolina or southern NC. Eastern and Western but no idiot calls it Southern NC.

To answer your question, there are no “big” towns except Greenville and Asheville and neither of those are big.

Hendo, Brevard, or better any small community between. 45 minute, light traffic commute to Greenville SC.
