The only people I know who prefer the Miko's, Village Deaux, Cajun Market, Meche's, Jak's King Cakes over the other offerings are either under 22 or have a BMI over 22, or both. They are a cinnamon twist with donut filling and icing piped over them. Maybe a nostalgia thing if that is what you grew up with, and I could certainly understand that.

There's several different styles, and everyone has their preference, but Keller's is far superior IMO.

just ordered one from the Meche’s in Lafayette and it was “ok” at best. The Meche’s in Morgan City was waaaay better when it was open. M Randazzo’s had already stopped selling for the year..dammit.

Yeah, cause it’s a damn donut cake. Same thing for Southern Maid donut cakes in Shreveport. Really good, but only when fresh

Haydels, Caludas, Marguerites. All are excellent, I’ve bought personally, and I’ve had delivery done with the 2nd 2. Haydels also does delivery correctly.

We’re about to do some of the New Orleans bits from A Confederacy of Dunces. No Mardis Gras stories, but only because I don’t know any. If anyone has any good recommendations, please share!!

Right now we are reading some classic short stories: Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, Richard Wright, Faulkner, Alice Walker….

Caluda’s is my go to.

Had Caluda’s yesterday with cream cheese. Excellent

Nonna Randazzo’s last week was a mess. Cream cheese and strawberry were thrown on top of the king cake and was gooey mess as described above.

I just got one shipped from Tartine and it was pretty darn good. I would search more for who may be the cheapest

Its a lafayette thing. Meches has a cult following even though the donuts are complete shite.

The problem is Haydel’s or any other place worth a damn is sold out on shilling dates before Mardi Gras.

Not true .... I just went online, and ordered a Pecan Praline KC from Haydel's that will be shipped today 1/31, and delivered to my family in Chicago tomorrow 2/1 (UPS next day air). Each Christmas they send me 4 Lou Malnatti's pizzas and I return the gesture with a KC. ... FYI - Haydels ships bakery items ordered on TUE, WED, and THURS

This is a rather in-depth history from inception. Pretty interesting read for being as detailed as it is.

Just order a cake and get it via ground shipment and save a bunch of money.

If it's past the cake's expiration date tell the class: "The cake is never dead. It's not even past..."

Good stuff, though I'm not familiar with Richard Wright. The Moviegoer by Walker Percy is the only one I thought of off the top of my head that works Mardi Gras partly into the plot, but it's been years since I've read it. it's set mostly in New Orleans. If you haven't read Percy, then, well, you should!

Sugar Love in Slidell and Sucre’ are my favorites. They both shipped to me in Colorado and were as good as I remember!
