If not arrested yet, sounds like the detectives don’t have enough evidence and need a confession to arrest and do all that paperwork and eventual court time expense. They don’t have the time or desire to frick around with marginal cases. Neither does the DA office. They always want a confession, but sounds like they NEED one. If they thought they had enough evidence, they would have arrested him already and let the DA do his thing to try and convict/plea without one.
But yes, he shouldn’t talk to them anymore and listen to a competent criminal defense attorney on what to do from now on.
Rarely is it a cat and mouse game, like you see on TV (Ha!) between the detectives and the focus of the investigation. Crimes are constantly happening. They need to decide whether to arrest or not ASAP and move on because another file will hit their desk before they come back from taking a shite break at taxpayer expense.

Your “friend” has already made a huge mistake talking with the police, and “cooperating 100%” without a lawyer present.
In fact, the damage may already been done. Even if “your friend” answers the same (but differently worded) questions differently and honestly believes he’s telling the truth, it can be brought out in court that he lied under questioning.
