Stihl does have issues with their carburetors but they are the best chainsaw around.

Should be clearing up soon. They bought the supplier out

Even then, a good dealer should warranty carb problems.

I've ran a few huskys. The pro grade ones are not bad, but they're not stihls.

Depends on what you buy. The Swiss made saws are still decent. Everything else they make sucks.

ETA: When it comes to dealer support network, parts availability and warranty Stihl wins. Easily.

That's a man killer.

Biggest one I ever saw in person was a 660. That's a big heavy arse bastard.

My poulan sucked. I ended up taking it to Home Depot when I fricked it up. They quoted me 20 less than what I bought it for. I declined their service and just left it in the parking lot

We sell a few 660s a year. Probably an 880 every couple years.

I did see an 880 with a gold plated bar at our distributor's place a few years ago. It weighs like 23 pounds before you even fill it up and put on the bar and chain. The gap between the 660 and 880 is HUGE in terms of power. They're unreal.

IDK why anyone in the south would really need one. They sell a shitload in the pacific NW though.

ETA: The only 880 I have personally sold was to a guy that is like 5'8" 120lbs wringing wet. He's also supposedly some kind of world champion fiddle player or some shite

Get the Farm Boss. There is a reason it's the best selling chainsaw Stihl makes.

Discontinued. Only ones still out there are what's left in dealer inventory.

MS250 is a great option. I have an O25 w/ 18" bar that is my go-to for pretty much everything. I have a 391 with a 25" bar too. If all you are worried about is light stuff and maybe storm clean-up a 192CE is a featherweight with a 16" bar but they aren't often stock and not cheap.

Nah. They're going to "full pro" status now and will only carry a 90-day warranty. For the same money you can get a 251.

Which probably is impossible to find. The 291 is solid though. Pretty much the same thing except it has some upgraded features (mainly upgraded anti-vibe system) and is just as good as the 290.

Difference between Husky and Stihl is that a Stihl makes about twice the torque a comparable Husky does. Husky engines also do not last as long because you have to wind them up to cut. Not so with a Stihl. That and having to wait a week to get parts for a Husky

I have owned probably 10 different saws, and run probably 30 others. Take my word for it. Also, the farm boss might be good for once a year or every other year use, but is a POS in my eyes.

I have run everything from a top handle arborist saw with a 12" bar to an 090 with a 5ft bar. Those little arborist saws are

Yeah. I have pretty good luck with cheap stuff. I had a Murray lawn mower for 9 years and even then I gave it to my neighbor lady so I could get one with a bagger. Ironically, that mower seized up in like six months.

If you're frequently using a 290 then you're doing it wrong.

For a homeowner cutting firewood or someone with a little land that needs a 20" saw, it is an awesome saw.

It isn't meant for anyone making a living using a saw. That is why they make the 362.

That's all well and good, but this guy might just need something to cut a few limbs out of his yard after the hurricanes, not run a timber company.

I am going to upgrade my 290 soon. I do use mine more than a normal homeowner cutting overgrown shite off of repo houses.

What should I look at?

Also, I stay away from odd numbered saws

Only yuppies and St Amant people say Stihl.......Husky and Red Max will run circles around a Stihl period. Stihl aren't German made anymore. Red Max is best saw I've ever used period and I've cut more trees down than everyone in this thread period.

Then you're missing out. Probably the best pound for pound saw they make. Unless you need a 440 or more, it's a beast.

Know how I know you're full of shite?

They're about 50/50 when it comes to saws. It is either made in Germany or Virginia Beach. A few trimmers are made in Japan but it is the entry level stuff...pretty much the 2 cheapest ones.

If you want a real serious upgrade, look at the 362. Expensive but a REALLY nice saw.

If you don't want to spend that kind of coin but want more power just go 311 or 391. Those are pretty much your only options until you get into the 440s...which would likely be way overkill for you. Check out the 291 though. It isn't a bad saw.

Stout, check Steam.
