wo-thirds of the staff currently based in the Princess Elisabeth Polar Station in Antarctica have been infected with Covid-19, even though very strict health measures were put in place.

Despite being located in one of the most remote places in the world, two-thirds of the station’s total 25 staff members have been infected. No severe symptoms have been reported as of yet, the Belgian Polar Secretariat confirmed to Le Soir Mag.

All staff members preparing to depart to the station had to undergo a PCR test in Belgium two hours before leaving for South Africa, take a PCR test five days after their arrival in Cape Town, where they also had to quarantine for ten days. Another test was required when leaving Cape Town for Antarctica and another PCR test had to be undergone five days after arrival.

Despite the strict measures, one positive case was detected on 14 December among a group of people who had arrived at the base seven days earlier, and although this person was immediately placed in isolation, tests revealed that two others had also contracted the virus.

All three people were evacuated on 23 December, but the virus continued to circulate. According to a virologist consulted by the Polar Secretariat, there is a high probability that the infection at the station is due to the Omicron variant, given that it accounts for 99% of the cases in South Africa, which would explain the rapid circulation.

if only they would’ve followed the confusing and ever evolving COVID measures set forth by their scientific tv betters and politicians.

Everyone knows masks only help a little and the vaccine only helps with the severity. We haven’t found a way to stop it.

Which pocket did they have their change in? You can be vaxed, waxed, masked and the whole 9 yards but CDC says hold your change in the left pocket you racist bigots.

They only say infected, not sick. This is the utter non-sense that COVID is. Tests are about as accurate as me with a putter. Asymptomatic cannot spread the virus. This is all completely stupid. Antarctica has real issues that can kill you.

You ain’t lying about that, my wife tested positive yesterday at work and I told her it was 5 days at home because I swore I saw earlier this week that’s what the CDC changed it to. According to her boss it’s still 10 days, which I think is wrong.

At most of the bases in Antarctica they hate it when a new person arrives. They will usually bring in a cold virus that will cycle through everyone at the base. Everyone will then be fine until the next bew person arrives.

Why not just give the total number? It's not 25,000 people. Is it 16 or 17 positive cases? 16.6666666?

It’s actually zero days if you don’t get a test.

Don't take a test. Boom. Solved the crisis.
Two years of this nonsense is more than enough.

Just because strict measures are in place doesn’t mean people are going to follow them
