Cenla. May have been a slight friend deal but I’m not sure. I was pleased. The beef is tasty.

It was longer than 10 years ago and remember taking a hit on some out of the money put options thinking the market would correct itself. I followed it for years after and it never went back down

was walked through this process and cattle farmer in Montana sells his cattle to feed lot feed lot fattens them up to get weight on them sells again to makes money. Why the hell would you pay taxes maintain a 15k acre ranch that you can accomplish with a feed lot? Why every cattle farmer should just convert to feed lots?

He obviously did a poor job walking you through this. Your last question shows that

Skinning and quartering a cow is easy. Did one in college, threw the quarters in the deep freeze, and cut steaks off as needed with a hack saw we kept by the freezer. The cow was free. If you've skinned and quartered a deer, beef is no different.

Buy a fat angus calf and do it yourself.

$3.65 a pound vacuum sealed. You can buy a whole 800#, half 400#, or individual steaks and ground meat in the store.

That's from Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop, La.

Live cattle on the commodity market today is $.90/lb and the processors are getting $7.69/lb (per the above post). It don't take a rocket scientist to figure out who's making the money in beef.

Well, yeah. You ever tried to take a bite of t-bone off a cow on the hoof?

PROTIP: They fight back.

Also, for butchering, you have to have a USDA inspector on site if you are going to sell the meat. There is another bottleneck and inspectors are expensive to keep on the payroll of local places which is why you don't see them around anymore.

Find a farmer to sell you the whole cow for cash. Have him kill it and skin it. Butcher the meat yourself. You can YouTube the different cuts of meat and where they are. It’s not hard to do

So how much could you buy a cow for and butcher it yourself? I have a commercial grinder. Don’t think I’m interested but would like to know the price. I’ll kill the dang thing myself.

The hard thing about that is transport and you are talking a shite ton of guts, bone, skin, etc.

Eta: yes the issue isn’t the farmers it’s the ability to process them on a small scale for local buyers.

Market price. Probably about $2 a pound live weight for a 1000lb steer. I havent checked prices in a while. That would yield you about 450 or 500 pounds of meat
