I was walked through this process and cattle farmer in Montana sells his cattle to feed lot feed lot fattens them up to get weight on them sells again to makes money. Why the hell would you pay taxes maintain a 15k acre ranch that you can accomplish with a feed lot? Why every cattle farmer should just convert to feed lots?

What a minute hand!! There’s a big difference between cattle farmers and row crop farmers!!

I get that some cattle guys are tied in with the idiot major beef processors and they are getting screwed over constantly for the prices they are getting.

Sounds like you've got it figured out.

You can completely cut the processor out if you want. Buy a steer, shoot it, hang it off a very stout tree limb and get to hacking.

Grocery store ground beef

What you would be buying

Local rancher sells to feed lot. Feed lot gets them ready to butcher and sells to packer. Packer then sells wholesale

Beef in the store almost certainly came off a feedlot. Beef out the pasture came off of a pasture.

Thanks for educating me. Like I said, I have no idea how this industry works. Hell, I'm just now getting into raising laying hens!

I bought a half last week.

Ended up w 310 lbs of beef. Ground, ribeye, t bones, short ribs, soup bones, sirloins, sirloin tip roast, chuck roasts.

Paid 800 for the half and 225 for the cutting and vac pack. So just a smidge over 3 bucks a lb. great beef at a great price imo

Sounds like you got a deal! You got twice as much, for the same price they want around here, for a quarter. I guess I'll stick to buying choice cuts, when I want some, from the local butcher shop, and just get my ground beef from Costco.

Friend,

Saw some 90/10 at Sam's this week for $3.25/lb. I used to prefer Wagyu for my burgers, but recently have been using 93/7 and up. Really am enjoying these burgers which taste more like steak than burgers. Gone are my days of lots of fat in the burger.

Friend,

Do you have a picture of the sign advertising this ground beef?

Most "ranchers" with 15k acres are not solely cattle ranchers. They just need the cattle for agricultural exemption on 15k acres.

Umm, if that includes the expensive cuts, that's a pretty good deal isn't it?

No an all in per pound of over $8 is not a good deal. Should be all in around $5 per pound at most. I usually get beef for $3-$4 per pound freezer ready.

Would you sell a steer straight to the trailer?

I am too far away from you, but butchering your own animal isn't that hard. I know the USDA gets involved if it goes through a locker, but my son has been after me to buy a live steer at around 1200# and butcher it here.

Buy from a local beef producer and have it processed yourself. It’s rather easy.

We've done this several times over the years. Usually, we split a cow and a hog with family friends. All of it is too much for us to deal with at one time, plus we save a little money by splitting cost.

Friend,

I too was once misguided by the masses and believed

you're missing out. Fat = flavor.

More recently, the 93/7 burger transformation has really opened my eyes to the greatness of the beef taste. More and more it reminds me of a good steak. Superb!
