B.C.E. and C.E. as a dating system makes absolutely no sense to me

Secular historians attempting to throw out B.C. and A.D. amuse me when you consider both systems use the same person/event to reckon time in the West.

Re-writing hundreds of years of historical texts would be a giant pain in the arse. The church got there first, so they get to choose the date (even though it’s off by about 30 years). But they went too far with the nomenclature. Before Christ and in the year of our Lord border on professions of faith which many people don’t have. I doubt anyone would have cared enough to change them had they settled on something less aggressive like “before Jesus” and “in the year of Jesus”.
But, they, like Icarus, flew a bit too close to the sun, and now the wax is melting. They had a damned good run, though.

No it's a good thing. It started from the 17th century onward, first in the work of Kepler, who used the term "vulgar era" in the older Latin sense as referring to something common or to the common people. One thing it allowed was standardization of the various calendars even further, as the BC/AD adoption wasn't widespread in Europe until the 15th and 16th century, culminating with Pope Gregory, which provided a standardization framework for Europe. The BCE/CE calendar was quickly adopted by non-Christian scholars well before the "secular" era too, as the standardization it offered gave it a lot of popularity, even before official organizations moved to the BCE/CE standard.
The BCE/CE is the compromise system that works fairly well, and without such a compromise, I'm skeptical the Gregorian calendar, which has its own problems (particularly when 365 is perfectly divisible by 13), would probably have not seen widespread adoption.

You think Dionysius cared about a proper dating system when he came up with the BC/AD designations? The BC/AD system, in terms of proper dating, might be off by a number of years, as according to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great, who died, according to other ancient sources, in the year 4 BCE. There are also other problems with the BC/AD designation as "proper dating system" which makes the distinction between BC and AD very complicated, and ultimately arbitrary.
