Incorrect. It became widespread throughout Europe early in the 9th century thanks to Charlemagne stamping official documents using that particular dating system. By the 15th century it had been adopted by ALL of Europe.

I didn't mention the scientific community in my OP as they aren't who I was directing my ire at. I'm talking about the historical community. My community. I'm sure western scientists still celebrate on New Year's Day just like the rest of us.

Which affected Frankish and Catholic lands. I’m extremely skeptical of the claim that the designation was used in places that had not been Christianized yet, as the Scandinavian countries had official archdioceses beginning in the 1100’s, the Kievan Rus not til the 10th century, and not the Baltic til the Northern Crusades.
