I would expect some shady shite in most apartment complexes in large cities. If she takes the job we’d have a budget of about 750k but I’d want to stay around 450-600

Too bad you're on that side of Houston, I can't recommend the Woodlands enough to people that get relocated here.

I live in Sugar Land - great place to raise a family. Only negative is commute which is dependent on where your job will take you; Energy corridor, Med center, Galleria areas are all okay drives, but you don't want to have to go across town. The shite people are saying about crime is relevant to Houston, or any major city for that matter, but Sugar Land is about as safe as it gets for suburbia life.

I don’t. Destroyed my life in 2016 and the rebuild has been slow but steady. I’ll get there one day. House purchase should happen in about 2 years hopefully.

I owned a home.

Once.

I had to get here first, figure it out from here. Can’t always plan steps 3,4,5 without at least taking the leap.

With that budget you should be looking in memorial near beltway 8. Wilchester, Nottingham forest, Yorkshire, etc. close enough to sugar land for commute and keeps you in town for everything else.

I wouldn’t take any advice from Klerk Kent. I’d only be drinking buddies with him.

I haven’t looked at jobs yet in depth. The offer she got is a private practice that’s growing and in sugar land.

We’re thinking about going next week to talk to the owner and look at some homes. I just can’t get over the real estate cost

this is solid advice.

After getting more context from the OP, Sugarland wouldn’t be a bad fit for a family able to move. Would be an upgrade from just about anywhere in Louisiana.

Definitely. Traffic is a f’n sport around here and they say it’s not even bad yet because of Covid. Seems bad to me.

$7500 in property taxes a year on a $250k wakes you up real quick

Never really own your home in Texas.

I like Houston. I don’t regret the move from Louisiana. But I can’t speak on Sugarland, I live in Houston.

The fresh warm tortillas from HEB make it a no brainer.

Rent the truck, you won’t regret it.

I know we have an open apartment here because like I said, the dude died.

The houses can be cheap, but be careful getting too deep into some of the neighborhoods. You can be 10 minutes away from getting onto the major access roads. Property taxes can also be high (Sugar Land is generally only 2-2.5% vs 3+ in some burbs). This can surprise some people, but for high earners you can come out ahead vs paying 6% income tax particularly when accounting for good the public school systems. You're already saving $20K per year vs NOLA.
