Houston is too costco for mr . Give me a place with charm

there it is, the whole i like living in a lesser place because.....well....."charm" or "culture" etc.

I ended up not moving due to the death of my FIL and an actual better opportunity for my wife here in LC popped up. But the whole houston sucks because its too materialistic, lacks "charm" etc. all BS for those that are not driven and do not want better things.

Im not saying you cant be upper middle class and very driven in LA, just 99% of the people I see that say something lacks charm or lacks culture fall into the category of not being driven and usually shite on others for trying to better themselves.

It’s great despite what a segment of envious posters on here will say. Houston has pretty much everything. Plus side is that it’s close to South Louisiana for easy trips. Been said a million times before. That’s why it’s so popular for Louisiana transplants.

That’s a good point. I should have said League City, not Dickinson, though they are right next to each other.

I have lived here since 2011. It’s fine. If you are single or young and married with no kids, it is a big city with lots to do and two international airports that will get you anywhere else you want to go quickly and cheaply, all while making great money comparatively.

That said, it is not as cheap as people make it out to be (though it isn’t really anymore expensive to NOLA or BR), and it has shite weather and shite topography. I’m looking at moving because I miss seasons that are not Hot and Hotter and I want to get the frick away from hurricanes. Plus I don’t like the schools here as they are too big and too focused on testing (unless you go private and spend $30k a year plus your “suggested” donation). But all of that bad stuff you still have in NOLA or BR, though private schools are cheaper in those cities.

I also don’t care for hunting and, while I love fishing, I have no time to get out on the water, particularly when it is as far away from me as it is (over an hour and a half for me to get to Galveston with no traffic). So it’s not my ideal place.

That said, it has been a great place to make a ton of money while living relatively cheaply compared to other cities that pay what Houston pays (e.g. Chicago). And this is ultimately Houston’s best quality.

that depends on where you are. Trying to drive from any of the suburbs to downtown in rush hour....frick yes its worse.

But many work in the suburbs and if he is like his wife and lets say works in industry. They could live in league city or sugarland and traffic would not be worse than NOLA for either, prolly better.

Well put. Living/working in Houston has allowed me to do anything else I want to do in life. Ironically, other than food scene, all of it is outside of Houston.

Moved here from the cold and I endure the heat with no issue. October - May is usually amazing weather.

I am 90 minutes from Galveston on a bad day here in The Woodlands but I still have plenty of choices for freshwater fishing.

This is what makes the Austin (hill country) area superior in my opinion. Way less rain than SE Texas and much prettier topography. I said it before, it’s odd how Dallas and Houston get more attention than central Texas/hill country.

Yeap. Most of the worse traffic are experienced by people that “work” in Houston - not “live” in Houston.

It’s like saying - “NOLA traffic is horrible, it takes me 45-60 minutes each way to drive from the North Shore to Algiers.”

dunno what north shore is running nor sugarland specifically, but general area is like 200 per sf for on one of the lakes and like 125-140 per sf for brand new house in one of the new subdivisions.

BTW OP, if you are wanting to stay in the southern suburbs, Friendswood is another great area.

eta: sugarland is pretty cheap too, example

LINK

that would cost a fortune in metairie/kenner and is not freaking across the a long arse bridge from the city.

sugar land, the woodlands, etc aren’t much, if any, closer to Houston than the north shore

Love it. Moved from BR over 10 years ago. Houston area keeps improving. Every time we return to BR we get more and more sad.

woodlands isnt, but sugarland is only about 22 miles to downtown. but both, especially the woodlands, has much more to offer than the northshore.

Hell for a family guy like the OP, i would say outside of sports and restaurants, the suburbs of houston offer more than nola metro does. and a shite ton more than the northshore does.

and OP isnt going to live in the woodlands and have his wife work in sugarland. dunno why people keep bringing that up. they are on opposite sides of the city.
