Property taxes and insurance in New Orleans can push you pretty close to that amount.
. this is a lie
I just searched for a house for sale in Sugar Land (place OP mentioned) and found one for sale for $443K. Fort Bend county has it assessed at $350K and total taxes paid for 2019 was $7,188.35. That same property in Orleans Parish would be $4,100.00 with the homestead exemption.
Add insurance and you easily will exceed the Texas property. Flood alone (on average) in New Orleans is twice as much as Houston. I know people in New Orleans paying anywhere from $2K-$10K in flood insurance. I would assume a wind and hail policy with homeowners is more in New Orleans than Houston. All of this before you get car insurance, sewerage and water services, and school tuition costs.
So which part is a lie?

Any advice?
Make the move. You won't regret it. Houston isn't a great place to visit, but its actually a pretty great place to live.

Bruh if you aren’t living in a suburb of Alexandria, LA - you aren’t living

Commutes in Houston can be horrific.

You need a stiffer drank for the trip

One of the best parts about living in and around Houston is that they actually fix shite when it is broken. Pot holes get fixed, interstates get widened, new interstates get built, multiple loops around the city, etc.
I don't mind paying property taxes when you can actually see improvements around the area.
Or maybe that is just me being jaded at shitty Louisiana taking income tax and never improving a fricking thing.
ETA: If someone sees a homeless person in Sugar Land, the cops take them elsewhere (probably into Houston LOL). I have seen 2 my entire time here.

Alexandria. Hell, all of Cenla is bad. It’s so behind the times even compared to North Louisiana. It legit feels like a time machine when you’re there.

Finally, if you're use to fishing Delacroix or Hopedale or the Rigolets, prepare to be disappointed. Amazing fishery in SE LA.
I'm glad you haven't figured it out. One less coonass eating the big trout.
The fishery in SE LA dwarfs TX fishing. Have fished Matagorda and Port A. IMO (and not just mine), they hardly compare. But some folks like to play in their waders.
