I believe they converted some naval guns for land use

They just don’t make em like they used too!

Honestly, the poor casualties of the war might want it and all war (but not the lessons) to fade away forever.

No...imagine a shell larger than you landed next to you and didn’t go off. Just sat there, buried in the earth.

Head west on Johnson Street from Highway 21, and the markers will be on your right. There are two, and both are in front of private homes. The markers were put there about four or five years ago. One is before the sewer plant, the other after.

WWI fascinates me in a macabre way. It had a profound impact on society and culture going forward.

I can thank the OT for recommending the Hardcore history podcast on WWI: Blueprint for Armageddon. It really puts in prespective how horrific that war was for the soldiers involved.

I really didn't know much about it until I listened through that. The horror is just amazing. Shell shock was probably a blessing.

Aren't there places in Belgium and France that are closed off due to the large amount of unexploded ordnance?

People can drive up to Port Hudson and see Civil War trenches very easily. And few bother to do so.

I'm surprised at how many people don't even know about it.

Wasn't just Germany but yes, in order to concentrate heavy artillery more inland, surplus naval guns were mounted on trains.

My grand dad was shell shocked in WW1. Went to war with black hair, came back with white. Gassed, blown into tree from shell fire, fought with bayonette. Great man.

It's hard to even imagine what that would be like.

Every battlefield I've visited has been a very pretty place. Nature cares nothing about our striving; it bounces back faster than we do.

Gettysburg is tGOAT battlefield that I have visited. When my dad was at the Army War College is Carlisle we got to go several times. You can see the desperation in Lee's battlefield plan in ordering Pickett's Charge. The place is incredible for so many reasons.

Those are probably naval guns

Many nations scrapped/salvaged some of their naval guns and re-purposed them for field service.

Fun fact: the popular gin and champagne drink "French-75"s name comes from the French Canon de 75 modèle 1897 because of the great "Pop" it provides. In truth, the 75mm as a field piece was dated and vastly under powered compared to the newer German artillery of WW1.

Ever get to see a reenactment there?

I was there in the late 90's for one that I later read had the most reenactors ever with some saying up to 20,000 people. They perform the battles at the same time of the day in which the original battles began. The first morning we had to be in the cornfield at 3am and the battle started around 4. It was a crazy foggy morning and we literally couldn't see anything beyond 20-30 feet from us when suddenly it began. Cannon and musket fire and we couldn't see anything. Finally the sun came out and the fog started to dissipate and revealed 1000's of men laying all over the field. It was so surreal.

Yes it is. Been there many times when stationed in the area. Yorktown is also a great place.
