I went on a tour of several WWI sites with NATO staff officers. At one sight our guide was digging up partially exposed unexpended rifle rounds. He'd pry them open, pour out the powder and light it off to demonstrate the why we needed to be vigilant, stay on marked paths and not disturb anything to avoid unexploded ordinance. It was interesting touring these sights with a mix of mostly German, Dutch, Belgian, and US officers.

Look at The size of those artillery shells.

Imagine one of those landing in your trench and just blowing you and your trench mates to absolute smithereens. They’d bury you in a coffee can

I wish they would've preserved some of the trenches. Something about it just fascinates me. Maybe just how intricate and everything they were.

There are some locations that have been preserved and mantained or reconstructed.

People can drive up to Port Hudson and see Civil War trenches very easily. And few bother to do so.

Every battlefield I've visited has been a very pretty place. Nature cares nothing about our striving; it bounces back faster than we do.

Europeans aren't as keen to preserve battlefields and make them tourist attractions as Americans are.

The Europeans have plenty of battlefield tourism. There are museums and battle sites all over the place. I've visited battlefields of Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, Operation Market Garden, Maginot line forts, St Mihiel, Verdun, Bellau Wood, Waterloo and many lesser known sites. They all had gift shops, restaurants, museums, etc to cater to the tourist crowd. I'd say even more so than all but the most well known US battlefields.

Verdun was a grinder....it is good that nature is reclaiming the place.....the reality in 1916 was a scene from hell

I’m pretty sure the WWI vets would be happy to see those battlefields beautifully reclaimed by nature

Vicksburg is a great place to see remnants of trenches.

Weren't most of those civilian shelters/living areas?

I know they dug holes and small caves in the hills to hide from the artillary.

Union dug trenches to stay in cover as they closed in on the city.

Citizens also had dugouts that they built to live in during the bombardment.

Saw a similar photo gallery in The Atlantic today: link to Atlantic page

Some of those pictures remind of me of a quote from General Sir Charles Harington, before the Battle of Messines: ""Gentlemen, I don’t know whether we are going to make history tomorrow, but at any rate we shall change geography."

In Madisonville there are remains of trenches dug by the damn yankees in 1864. They are not very deep but they’re there and marked. They are also mostly on private property. I’d think it would pretty damn cool to have something like that in your yard.

As far as European battlefields, I’d like to visit them one day but it will be a day long down there road.

I can thank the OT for recommending the Hardcore history podcast on WWI: Blueprint for Armageddon. It really puts in prespective how horrific that war was for the soldiers involved.
