BR isn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. 99% of the crime you read about occurs in a handful of zipcodes, usually North BR or places you will never drive through. Living here isn't terrible unless you have a large family and a high paying job. You will need to sift through the trash public schools or pay for school, or hope they get into magnet schools.

As mentioned, the commute is cheeks. When the inevitable accident happens and I10 is shutdown, you are stuck and there's no escape plan. If this job is worth it, consider moving. I do know your specific circumstances but BR has decent options all around. Lots of people commute from Ascension or Livingston Parrish. That's really where why the traffic is bad on the interstate.

If you are single and no kids, you can find a lot of spots in downtown BR to live.

I worked with 2 people who commuted to BR from Laffy & Sunset 3 times a week and they said it sucked because of the traffic. We all ended up working from home during the Wu flu after shutting down ops in BR.

Move to New Roads or somewhere near 190. Take the old bridge into br. Take 190 to I-49 to visit your lafayette peeps. Hell, do anything other than live in br and deal with I-10.

I’ve lived in both.

Younger LSU student me was BR>Laff.
Older me that’s not in college is Laff>BR and it’s not even close.
Baton Rouge is full of traffic and not as good food.
Especially outside of LSU BR.
BR is full of necks, like the rest of the south.
Laff is unique. Neck free.

It's not even a contest. Lafayette wins in food, culture, and things to do. I live here because of work, but I'd move back to Lafayette in a second if I could.

I grew up in Lafayette and now live in Baton Rouge. Wouldn’t move back to Lafayette, in spite of the family nagging me about it for nearly the last two decades. There’s practically nothing I can do in Lafayette that I can’t do several times over in Baton Rouge. And because of the Vermillion River choke points, navigating the city manages to be worse there, in spite of Baton Rouge’s traffic issues.

You should have left out the commute comment if it's not an option. You will distract everyone and they'll focus on what you're saying you will not do.

By most accounts, you will not enjoy BR as much. You have to decide if the job opportunity is life changing enough to sacrifice what you currently have. Good Luck.

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, and lived/worked in Lafayette for about a year before moving back for a job I couldn’t pass up. I too was trying to figure out how to commute from Lafayette but it was not feasible. Lafayette is a great city, lots to do, great food and great people.

One thing I loved about Lafayette was not having to get on the interstate to get around town. In BR you damn near have to get on the interstate to go anywhere, and traffic is always horrendous.. Anyone in Lafayette that complains about traffic in laf, has never lived in Baton Rouge. There is absolutely no comparison in the two.

That being said, BR isn’t the worst. But I will definitely be looking to make my way back to Lafayette eventually.

Coworker commuted from Mandeville to Baton Rouge for years.

With the I 12 expansions this isn’t as bad as going the other way, still wouldn’t do it. And also depends on where in Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge would be the best city in the state if it were full of necks, but it’s not. It’s full of perpetual victims.

Commute, or simple travel between the west side of the I-10 Miss. River Bridge will become a total nightmare for the next 4+ years real soon.

It’s a floating pontoon bridge kinda like driving across a waterbed.

If you would like living in a bigger city with more amenities, things to etc., Baton Rouge is not a bad choice. I think the crime/traffic/issues in BR are worse than Lafayette, but it's not like Lafayette is free from those issues.

I've lived in Baton Rouge and Lafayette. Would probably move back to BR before Lafayette. But that's me.

Grew up in BR and have lived in Lafayette for 10 years. Lafayette is 100x better. Has to do with demographics and such.

What amenities can you find in Baton Rouge that you cannot find in Lafayette? I’m at a loss
