I went into Globe once, when I was about 10.

It was the filthiest store I'd ever seen.

As I recall it had no AC, just fans

that part I don't remember, the one in our town was like a scaled down version of T.G.& Y., it did seem to look a little dirtier

ETA: I went in there because a girl I was trying to promote, and did , had huge bewbs

What about Service Merchandise did BR have those?
Pierre Bossier mall had one in the 80's, not sure about South LA. My Dad bought a 22" cut push mower with a 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton in the early 70's, had TG&Y logo on it. This was in Minden. All the expensive toys were sold at Otasco, we couldn't afford to go there. We weren't "poor", my parents were just very disciplined at making a small paycheck go a long way.

Are we talking about the same store? Globe on Florida in BR.

It was two stores next door to each other: one a grocery and the other a dep't store, sort of scaled down K Mart

I may be misremembering the lack of AC, but not the dirtiness.

Was there a TG&Y next to the A&P on Staring Lane?
I think that was a Gibsons.

I didn't know it was a chain

Someday I must make a pilgrimage to Greenville MS, Not only does it have a Pasquale's pizza (the last one?) but in a town of maybe 25K people it has not one but two Roses

yes! TG&Y, Winn-Dixie and K&B, might as well have been Cortana Mall, and across the street, Mcdonalds (many Monticello birthday parties), A&P with their fresh ground coffee machines, and that Howard Bros with that distinctive high pitch noise at the front door/gate. yeah 83 not a good year along Comite.

I still have a couple of old spools of thread that belonged to my grandmother with TG&Y price tags on them.

I have a small bottle of Bacardi rum with the Eckerd price tag (2.19) on it from my Grandparent’s pantry
My Grabdma used it to make a cake IIRC

There was a second one at College roughly where Walmart is now. I say “roughly” because that whole shopping center got redone when Walmart went in.
