FWIW, your dilemma is why many parents in BR send their kid to private school. It isn't as much for the religious aspect as much as it is the ability for their children to receive a good education and play sports.

My oldest son graduated from a private school in BR and my youngest son went to same private school from Pre-K - 8th grade. He wanted to go to BRMHS so we applied and he was accepted so we let him make the switch. If I were to send him to private school I would want it to be either Catholic, Episcopal, or Dunham but to be honest he wouldn't make the baseball team at Catholic and would probably receive very little playing time at Dunham. I am not sure how good of a baseball team Episcopal has. He is a decent baseball player but his future is not in athletics. He would start for a start up program or a A or AA school but not at a private school that competes for championships. He just wants to play ball.

Should be since his school doesn’t offer baseball. I really thought he could play where he’s zoned and attend the magnet since they don’t offer it.

I'd advise you to call the LHSAA first. I do not think LHSAA eligibility is dependent on which sports are offered at which school. I am pretty sure you are just LHSAA eligible or not, it is not a situation, where he is eligible for baseball and not for track or soccer because they were offered at BRMHS. I think it is strictly which attendance zone you are in.

Episcopal was decent at the big 3 sports, but not great. It was actually part of the reason I liked it so much. I was able to play varsity as a sophomore in both football and baseball, and by no means was I the best athlete.

ETA: There are a lot of kids who play sports at EHS who wouldn't be good enough to play at the other schools in BR. The exception is cross country. Last time I checked they had won 22 state championships in a row.

Let him switch. If you do not let him he will look back on it later in life and wonder what it would have been like.

The LHSAA rule allows him to play right away if he transfers from a school that doesn't have that sport. The LHSAA also lets him only have to sit out 30 days if y'all live in Lee's district. Next, if he is ruled ineligible there is a form both principals can fill out. Once that form is filled out you can send it to the LHSAA for a ruling on his eligibility(I forget the name of it). He can play JV regardless of being ineligible or not, and he can practice with the varsity team. So if he isn't a stud he will get a years worth of good practice in before he hits varsity.

This all coming from my own personal experience as a coach who deals with the "great" LHSAA rules.

My kids aren’t nerds or anti- social dweebs. No need to be hostile to kids. One of them was an all state athlete as a freshman, the other two were both playing paying gigs in local clubs as HS students. Not an oz of arrogance in them . Just normal kids- who really love music and do well in school . The HS angst bro- let it go. They are High School kids. And every school I attended, including Woodlawn, had nerds and arrogant kids because humanity.

Have you talked to the administrators at the school or in the EBR Magnet office to see if switching is even a possibility?

I thought the regular magnet application was over, and I don't see Lee as a possible choice on the extended application period list of schools available.

I have not. As much as I like watching him play baseball I am against this move. I think he should stay at BRMHS. I told him and my wife to find out if it is even possible to transfer at this point before I have to make a decision.

If he is going to LSU, he can certainly earn acceptance into the Honors College there with a diploma from Lee and a good ACT score.

I don’t really get this line of thinking.. do colleges really care where you went to high school as long as you have a good ACT score and GPA?

It absolutely makes sense to talk about the quality of the education, culture, parental involvement, etc. as all of these things can affect learning and development of good habits. But I don’t think high school “prestige” is really a thing as far as college admissions are concerned.

LSU Honors College admissions, for example, are entirely based on GPA and ACT scores as far as I know.

My nephew starts BRHS next year and was originally going to Lee for his freshmen year. He said Lee has more blacks and BRHS has more gays...I hope he isn't gay

I went to both schools. TBH, BRH will have more rigorous academics and Lee will be bullshite and more ghetto. Also, dont expect anything from Lees baseball team. they will suck and wont be able to field a team. if your son wants to play baseball, enroll him in a white private school. much better for social life, girls, sports, and networking.

If you want your child to be an artist or have a PHD in Liberal Arts, send them to BRMHS
If you want your child to be a productive member of society, send them to Lee

Completely agreed. The high school itself matters less than the fact that you're in a group of kids whose parents are themselves educated and actively involved.

It's just that those parents tend to send their kids to the same schools. Correlation instead of causation.
